I can't really get into swashbucklers in general, and this is a really, really silly one.

A lot of silly, swashbuckling fun with no real conflict to speak of. Lancaster (nearing 40) in one of his best roles, along with his mute sidekick, and enjoyable acrobatics are where this finds its main strengths. A protracted finale sours an otherwise good time.

Silly nonsense with Looney Tunes logic. I was so bored I stopped paying attention. Is the whole genre like this?

Highly enjoyable swashbuckler; the tone is set early on when Capt. Vallo (Burt Lancaster) says to the audience, "Believe only what you see. No; believe HALF of what you see." What follows involves double-cross, disguise, acrobatic skills and invention--literally. Bright scripting, deft direction, glowing color, and great music by William Alwyn. Lancaster and Nick Cravat as his mute first mate are superb, as is Torin Thatcher as Humble Bellows; Leslie Bradley's villain, however, is pretty dull.
