an all around great, light-hearted romp through a farcical version of the 40's that you would have to have a heart of stone not to smile at. sure to facilitate regular laughs, and great feelings of whimsy. my biggest complaint is helen hunt who seems to be miscast. proof that even in a new century woody allen knows how to play the game and do it right.

35th Woody film, 7 left! I didn't completely hate it but this is the worst movie Woody made in the 00's (edging out Whatever Works). The cast was pretty bad in this one. Helen Hunt plays the same role she always plays, yet somehow worse than usual. Charlize Theron's role was useless and unbelievable. Aykroyd was awful and Elizabeth Berkley was terrible again (how is she able to get in movies?). A couple of good jokes but overall nothing that remarkable. Ending was really lame.

Allen's worst role/script AND Helen Hunt as leading lady? What an unfortunate mess, Aykroyd is the only one trying [why can't this man get a good movie?]. I haven't minded the previous bouts of magic realism from Allen but this is just stupid.

One of Woody's worst. Really slow moving, preposterous, and not funny. Plus the romance between Woody and Helen Hunt is icky and completely unbelievable.

Not a masterpiece. But I like the style of Woody Allen. It is a film unpretentious but has a smooth and pleasant mood.

I'm surprised to see this one rated so poorly. While it's certainly not among Woody's best films, it's nonetheless a fun romp through the 1940's with Woody putting in a charming performance.

Allen is fine, and I like David Ogden Stiers as a villain, but the movie is on autopilot.

I suppose if I can suspend enough belief to buy into Woody Allen as a suave ladies man I can also believe that Elizabeth Berkley could remain clebate till she got married. No wait, that's TOO much.

Woody Allen makes so many movies that even if you see them all a few will just be completely forgettable. This movie is completely forgettable.

Allen must have loved writing a quick-witted comedy that would fit glamorous 40s movie stars, only his wit sabotages him this time, as does the casting, as does the cinematography which, alas, does not shoot the sterile sets in black and white.

It's really not good. I would characterize Allen's films from about 1988 to 2005 as being flat, brown, and consisting entirely of medium shots. Doubly so for period films. Extremely visually boring. Once we get to Match Point we actually have some interesting cinematography, we have close ups, we have colours, and we have slow motion. None of his films from the preceding period has this. The lack of visual style makes this period from around 1988 to 2005 extremely difficult to enjoy.

The sheer amount of gags and one lines made this one work for me. Easy to access Woody Allen here.

Allen dabbles in the style of 40s noir, and this time he actually has a conventional mystery plot instead of pieces of insight about women. Although his lines lack the flair of his early work, there are some true gems in between. Not Allen's best, nevertheless entirely entertaining.

Kinda fun as pastiche, would have been more fun if Woody Allen didn't seem so miscast in his own neurotic persona and if he didn't just creep the fuck out of me. Wears the viewer down as it goes on, from enjoyment to offense to boredom.

A somewhat cheap and awkward Golden Age replica, with bad lighting and old Hollywood heightened vernacular which often isn't delivered so well. But it's a fun scenario, a charming combination of actors, and is made with the same enthusiastic reverence as all of Allen's period pieces. Amusing, not as bad as its reputation suggests.
