The typical high school movie, updated for modern teens and modern technology, made by people who have a very shaky understanding of modern teens and modern technology.

A Frankenstein's monster of a dozen teen movies. I like Mae Whitman, but a leading lady she is not. The rest of the cast feels plucked from a catalogue without a consideration of their acting abilities (they have none). Are you still reading this? Why?

Probably the worst of the recent teen comedies that I've seen, but that's not actually to say that it was that bad. Unlike better films like Edge of Seventeen or Spectacular Now, The DUFF doesn't provide any surprises, memorable characters or unique style, but it gets the job done and provides reasonable entertainment for it's duration. Mae Whitman is fine as the lead and Robbie Amell resembles young Tom Cruise so much that it becomes distracting.

The DUFF is a movie that wants to be all about being and embracing yourself, and it does so explicitly telling you so right before the credits roll. Its story is predictable and not all that interesting, its lead character goes through a simple arc that isn't very fun, and worst of all, it's not particularly funny. This is a comedy that wants to be the next Mean Girls, but it's nowhere near as clever or smart as Mean Girls is. The DUFF is a movie I hoped to like, but was disappointed by.

This seemingly fresh treatise of the good-old predictable hottie-realises-he's-been-in-love-with-the-dork-all-along type of film manages to feel different and indeed fresh at parts. But then again it doesn't attempt to hide its true formulaic form (see what I did there) and follows the predictable pattern: the dorky character has an epiphany, goes on a personal development journey, has a major embarrassing moment, comes to terms with her own self, gets the love of her life. Classic.

Mae Whitman deserves to be a star, but to do that she needs a better script than this Mean Girls wannabe.

Reductive and not nearly as smart as it pretends, The Duff would be a complete failure if it weren't for its two funny leads

Mae too old. All "pretty" girls have nothing else to offer. The teen boys are not at all crushable. And too old. Comedy not funny. The bullying aspect is weakly played. Poor telling of the "be comfortable as yourself" teen pic moral. Unbelievable resolution.

Take my critic card away if you want, but I really enjoyed it. I just found it funny and clever, ultimately, and it subverted conventions in meaningful and entertaining ways. The chemistry between Whitman and Amell was really good and helped it a lot, and while it does go to a place you'd expect... it was a fun journey. I'm very surprised by this because I expected to hate it, as the trailers were terrible.

A few laughs here and there, but other than that there wasn't much to offer. You could see the ending coming from a mile away. Really no different than any other generic teenage movie.

Completely and utterly predictable, The Duff is just another feel good movie. The quality is far from good, but films like these are most certainly alright to watch on a lazy Saturday. So, 40/100.

W2E0P1S0V1M1A1R0. Big waste of Mae Whitman, and (according to my wife) a big downgrade in story from the book itself.

Just another high school 'ugly duckling' story. Also I got fricking shivers when I saw 'hacking' - 'shuting site down'. The 'hacker' friend selected 'Which Windows installation would you like to log into' in MS PowerShell, running with administrative privileges. And it was DONE. Bitch, please. And using 6+ years outdated OS for god's sake. Hacker my ass. How about using "report" function on that 'video sharing site'? I hate when people lack common sense. If you want to bluff, make sci-fi film.

Enjoyable enough as a romantic comedy. Mae Whitman and Robbie Amell are good, although of course it's fairly predictable, but that doesn't bother me too much. I wish Skyler Samuels had more to do because I have liked her in other things I've seen her in.

It did not do too much more than a standard "guy realizes who he is really in love with" kind of movie, but that doesn't mean it didn't have some solid performances. I have enjoyed Mae Whitman since Parenthood and this continues that trend.

Yet another of those problematic teen movies where the quirky, confident girl ends up defining herself by what kind of man she can nab. I dug all the peripheral stuff--like when Bianca gets really pissed off and goes to school in her pajamas, or when she argues with her friends about the quality of their various Twitter accounts, or when her mom makes a SPINAL TAP joke that everyone thinks is a TWILIGHT joke. Only in those fringe moments does this thing really seem alive.

AMAZEBALLS! Okay, not really, but I mean, for what it is, I enjoyed it well enough. I really just wanted to say amazeballs in a review. And who would have thought that ripping off The Simpsons could lead to self-help success? I'm not the audience that this kind of movie speaks to but there are some really genuinely funny and endearing moments (ie. "Why was I Bosley? There were THREE angels!"). This is completely inoffensive and totally watchable. Really great soundtrack. A genuine surprise.

The modern take on She's all That. Not as good of course but it's very nice. If it was skewed to a little older of an audience it could've been an all timer given the sharpness of the writing and the chemistry the characters have.

The DUFF is so predictable, watching it will feel like déjà-vu. It does have a positive message, albeit one that is layered on a little too heavily. Amell is a saving grace in his role, but can't redeem the film for its weak plot, stereotypic characters, and forced humour. There are a few laughs, but most of them come from the out-takes during the credits. In the film's favour, it does feature a Daft Punk song at prom.

I probably should not have seen this movie just right after I saw Easy A. Most of the main characters are a bit off in their own ways, and not in a good/comedic way. There are some enjoyable scenes, though.

Let's make up a concept that doesn't exist in real life and label it to make a movie out of it. And what we find is that this is basically a remake of every other fucking teenage movie. It has a few comedic highlights that save the movie from being complete shit, but it isn't good by any stretch of the imagination.

Not the disaster I expected based on previews. There is plenty of base humour, but it has interesting things to say about labels in a cyber-bullying universe. And Mae Whitman is so likeable that it's easy to enjoy, even when it falls into predictable teen comedy plot territory.

Alas, the film isn't all that nice itself. It means well enough, but it slathers on a great deal of unnecessary sexual content, and that's too bad. Sure, it's nice to say we've all been where Bianca's at--as long as "been there" doesn't include making out at the school newspaper or doing Jell-O shots at a party. But that's not exactly what we're told here. The insecurities we experience in high school are pretty universal. (pluggedin.com)

I love Mae Whitman - she's great in Parenthood, Arrested Development and Avatar: The Last Airbender - and, despite being SO DAMN OLD to be playing a high school student, I liked seeing her here. She's a more convincing "ugly duckling" than Rachel Leigh Cook in She's All That or Julia Stiles in 10 Things I Hate About You (not to say a hundred horny teens at every high school in the nation wouldn't still happily fuck her). Other than her; safe, predictable teen romcom. Will play on TBS forever.

Sometimes cute but mostly predictable story. Mae Whitman is mostly charming and she does her best with mediocre to bad material. Overall it was somewhat entertainment but not particularly interesting. There are a few moments with impact, but mostly the plot is worn and recycled.

Its like all the other movies that are all alike and just like this - yes its exactly similar to all of those similar movies that share all the same similarities. But i laughed at this one so im compelled to give it those points bc Im a stoic, humorless person so it must be a masterpiece to make me laugh. Thats a joke its not a masterpiece. Humor.

"In the end, it's not about popularity or even getting the guy..." says the main character at the end of the film, immediately after obtaining both of these things. Hey dummies, way to completely undermine your own movie. I guess I would be able to forgive the complete fumbling of the message if the movie had any other redeeming qualities, but it did not. It tries so hard to be hip and funny and clever, but it is none of these things. It's just bad.

The DUFF (2015) is a 2015 rendition of the geeky high school girl getting the school hunk set in an online age. Cute in it's way, but what a let down when there was no chick-fight with the reality bitch!

Doesn't quite transcend the cliches and trappings of the genre completely, but offers a funny, intelligent look at the world of high school seen through the eyes of strong, well-developed characters. Mae Whitman's Bianca is one of the most inherently likeable big-screen teens of recent years, complex and wryly funny character who carries the film marvellously. Great also to see Allison Janney supporting, and a frenetic unusual editing style that goes beyond iPhone texts being displayed on screen

The DUFF is the new formula that upcoming teen movies will follow - it has the humour, it has the romance and it has what current audiences will like. It also has an extremely likeable cast and a really interesting concept. My Favourite Film of the Year. The DUFF - The Delightful, Utterly Fantastic Film.

Mostly standard high school rom-com fare (though the DUFF concept is fresh), with a social media motif that's a little eye-rolling, especially in the editing. Whitman's enjoyable as the quirky lead on a journey towards self-acceptance amidst the usual line-up of characters (Jeong is a standout as the weird teacher). It's not groundbreaking, but it has its share of LOL moments (see the fireworks after her crush says "yes") and touching ones too (her requisite "rock bottom" scene is well-crafted).
