The Death and Life of John F. Donovan

There's the germ of a good movie in here but it's undone by uneven performances, questionable editing, and a badly-handled climax.

It’s Dolan, so loud music, melodramatic arguments and complex mother-son relationships. His first film in English is an attempt at an epic tale of connected lives. The plot is hard to swallow, but it’s hard not to admire the confidence, and the strength of a fine ensemble. Portman is particularly good, and Tremblay once again demonstrates himself to be a cut above just about any other child actor currently working.
