Great Tilda Swinton, everything else is just average

Twisty thriller is entertaining up to a point, but is ultimately little more than a screenwriters exercise; once the outlandish plot twists begin to pile up, the effect becomes deadening, and it becomes very difficult to care about the fates of any of the characters, despite a mesmerising performance from Swinton, and some quite amusing observational moments (love the juggling of domestic chores while negotiating blackmail!)

The original, "Reckless Moment", is far superior.

Eh. Good performance by Swinton, kind of dull story. Overlong.

"The Deep End may be preposterous but it's an engagingly moody experience nonetheless." - Ed Gonzalez

I actively hate Tilda Swinton, as in, I purposely go out of my way to avoid her films. With that being said......I loved this film. Swinton's haggard mug be damned.....it worked for me.

- avoid at all costs :: I might be the only one, but I had huge problems with this movie. Most other people seemed to love it. It just seemed a bit far-fetched for the events to play out like they did. I don't like spoilers, so I won't go into detail, but the premise that the entire movie is based on seemed a little weak to me. I had problems getting into the story after that, and then I had more problems with the way things turn out. Tilda Swinton is an easy actress to watch though.

Like SUTURE, an exercise in theory dressed up as a thriller, but here they manage the neat trick of updating the source material in salaciousness--it's a son and the blackmail is a video of him getting railed by Josh Lucas--but keeping the mother's torment teasingly, even frustratingly subtextual, augmenting the genderfucking with a number of subtle and sometimes very funny character riffs (watch the gearhead daughter) and committing to the pastiche with gorgeously artificial visual flourishes
