If it weren't for Jacqueline Bisset's "acting" chops this probably would have faded into obscurity, only to resurface in some movie book under that chapter "Actionless Adventure Films that Benefitted from Random Use of Wet TShirts".

As a diver myself these dive scenes were fascinating and scary to watch. I would never myself in a million years go into a wreck with the equipment that was available at that time. It is off course a movie so I assume the proper precautions were taken, but Nick and Jacqueline have balls and boobs of steel to do these scenes. All in all an amusing story which will pass a lost Sunday afternoon.

A bit slow, but from what I remember, this was a fascinating, and beautifully shot film to watch. Great cast, and Robert Shaw reprising his "old sea dog" from Jaws to a T ... what a tragic loss at just 51 !

Underwater movies need to overcome a lack of dialogue or else I just find them extremely boring. Even having Bisset in various stages of undress doesn't rescue the long stretches of silent underwater footage involving divers prodding at various sand/rocks before an eel kind of attacks them. The above-water plot isn't that interesting either. Cool that the actors did their own diving work. Fav scene: interacting with marine wildlife including a puffer fish.

Surprisingly good for its age. Bissett and Nolte are top notch while a young Gosset Jr. certainly holds his own. I found the soundtrack jarringly absent at times, but aside from that, a movie that deserves its praises and accolades...even 31 years later.

A great flick. Definitely not to everybody's liking- as the scores here indicate- but as a big fan of both Jaws and Peter Benchley's novels, I thought it was very well-done. The underwater photography is gorgeous, the plot moves at a brisk pace, and the acting certainly gets the job done. And it's wonderful to see Robert Shaw bring a Benchley character to life once more.

I was shocked to see that "Into the Blue" (with Jessica Alba) did not admit it was a remake of this film, or at least that the makers of "The Deep" didn't sue "Into the Blue". I would have. That being said, I really enjoyed this film and "Into the Blue". So if you liked "Into the Blue" watch this; if you didn't, don't. Over all I'd say it's an above average ocean/shark film. I liked it better than "Jaws" by a long shot and a little less than "Deep Blue Sea".

Very good film much better than it's remake "Into the Blue". And it was even much sexier, the costumes were good and the action was strong.

Silly but somewhat charming thriller/adventure with a fairly likeable cast of greedy characters who, unusually, are not punished for it. Also slightly unusual, from today's perspective, is the decision to make the bad guy an exotic, voodooish black man. A number of inventive moments.

Claustrophobic underwater scenes and gruesome deaths can't hide a slow, confused narrative.

Some aspects of "The Deep" were appealing, particularly the stunning underwater visuals. However, the romance between Jacqueline Bisset and Nick Nolte appeared strained and inauthentic. Robert Shaw once again shone as a seasoned sea captain, delivering a memorable performance. My recent viewing didn't captivate me as much as my initial encounter with this movie, perhaps due to more recent films like "Into the Blue" overshadowing it.
