Reminded me how much I like voice-over narration. Like 'Sideways', it blends seriousness and hilarity beautifully, the humour terrifically underplayed, deriving partly from the precise delivery. I'm happy to see Greer and Forster, both excellent, in roles like these and it's probably Clooney's best performance to date. Newcomer Woodley holds her own. Payne has a way with actors, that we know, and what more proof do you need than his succeeding in taming the ham of nature that is Matthew Lillard?

With all the awards buzz, I can't help but put this in the same boat as The Artist. While Payne's film had a lot more drama going for it, by the end, It never really hit me. There are some great performances as well as scenes (Clooney yelling at his comatosed wife, the moment it peaked for me) yet it just jogs around at its own pace and I just felt like shrugging my shoulders as it ended. Overall, I didn't find it memorable, insightful or all that engaging.

Great acting all way around. That's probably what Payne does best! Storywise I thought the whole wrapping of the important (dealing with the mother dying) in the descendants story was amusing but a bit misplaced. Clooney does great but Oscar worthy? No. Shailene Woodley is a revelation and we'll definately see more of her. The Descendants is one of those films you'll treasure while you're watching it, but afterwards you won't give it much thought...

If it suffers from anything it's only that this movies sometimes languid style & pacing can be a little grating. Beyond that there is just so much to enjoy that that minor quibble can be ignored. An Alexander Payne movie is quickly becoming a synonym for quality, & his ability to make dramady that doesn't rely on overly melodramatic cliche is a rare thing indeed. Clooney is very good, his support cast supurb & while some of the award hype is a little over-the-top, this is undeniably excellent.

A beautifully complicated, messy movie that reflects the beautiful, complicated mess that is life. Where most dramedies with this premise would use sappiness and melodrama to tug at heartstrings this movie pulls it off with quiet sincerity and the ability to honestly confront the fact that the darkest moments of our lives rarely lead to the perfectly scripted reconciliations that we want. The script is great, the acting is superb, its an all around great movie.

Alexander Payne with yet another hit, can any current director blend comedy and drama as well as him? Clooney is once again enjoyable in the lead and the supporting cast isn't too bad either. Doesn't feel like a best picture winner but it's an easy enough movie to watch and enjoy. And my god is Shailene Woodley sexy or what?

The Universe works in mysterious ways; tragedy really can bring a family together. There are a number of cliches about claiming responsibility and not taking things for granted, but it's presented pragmatically. Clooney is great, equally impressive is Woodley as his eldest daughter. They both undergo subtle, yet dynamic growth as they learn their strength as a team. A good mix of comedy and serious situations lead up to a serviceable ending, enhanced by a touching and poignant final shot.

The Descendants has some hard-hitting emotional moments, but a great amount of laughs too. The cast is pretty much great. Clooney gives one of his best performances. Shailene Woodley shines in her breakout role. People like Robert Forster and Judy Greer have smaller parts but are pretty good in them. I was awfully pleased with this film and it's atmosphere and humor and emotion. Why is everybody bitching about the narration? I barely noticed it.

Alexander Payne gets it. He continually throws life up on a screen without being melodramatic or using silly cliches. We are touched, we laugh and we do these things while being thoroughly engaged. Just a great, great screenplay. Clooney is solid, but it is Woodley that amazes here.

Tremendous! Though, not exactly alike, I recognized a lot of Payne's elements of style and humor from Sideways, and as I remember it, Descendants is even better. Absolutely one of Clooney's best films and one of his best performances. Kudos

While it never actively feels cliché, its well-worn story is ultimately its most prominent weakness, in that it's forgotten about quickly, disappearing into a stew of memories of similar films. The humor is hit-or-miss; the music nice but out of place; the acting more consistent. The climax is emotionally fulfilling, but all the meandering to get there is a bit tiring.

The Descendants is a genuine drama which initially didn't pull me in entirely, but once I got an idea of what was under the film's surface I really liked. Payne is one of the most engaging writer-directors working today - while his films are rarely the most complex, he always seems himself to understand them completely, and know exactly what needs to be done. Clooney is great, Woodley is even better.

Another fine dramedy from the reliable Alexander Payne. Perfectly calibrated performances from both George Clooney and Shailene Woodley as his daughter (which makes it a shame that she spends most of her time trapped on the worst show on television, Secret Life of the American Teenager). I had to dock it a few points for certain aspects of the ending being highly predictable, but it's still an easy recommendation.

Remarkably easy to watch. Initially, it doesn't seem like much, but it has a terrific way of sticking with you afterwards. Clooney and Woodley are great, and Payne takes care to allow his film to breathe--virtually every supporting player's given an opportunity to stand out, and the numerous sidetracks and diversions are what help make the flick meaningful. It begins as a soapy tragedy about a family in crisis, but ends as a highly likable slice-of-life dramedy.

Some very good acting on display here, including Clooney, Shailene Woodley and Judy Greer. I know the point of Sid's character in the film but I still couldn't help being completely irritated whenever he's on screen. I can't quite put my finger on what bothered me about the movie as a whole, but the balance between comedy and drama just didn't work. That breezy ukelele soundtrack and the constant slow fade-ins just gave me a bad vibe overall, taking me right out of the movie.

The Descendants is everything you want in an Oscar winner, and probably everything fans of Sideways wanted: very well-acted, nicely shot, with a beautiful setting that doesn't get too overworked, a heartpinching story, a dark sense of humour, children and parents behaving badly, a tearjerking conclusion, and utterly and completely predictable all the way. Liked it. Couldn't possibly love it.

a really good take on what life really is about, and how sometimes there's still things to gain from tragedy. everyone who ever lost a dear person will be able to relate, but it's still light hearted enough not to let you revel in sadness. last but not least, clooney shows once again that he is a highly underrated character actor.

Excellent dramedy but a little flat at the end. The trip was worth it though. I agree with Kasper about the voice over. It got a bad rap for some reason but it's a great tool. Yeah it has a slight liberal (Clooney) message but the solution which was hard to argue with was an individual one. The elevation of Sid was a nice turn.

Mostly well-written and well-made, but just a bit more conventional and pre-programmed than, perhaps, the filmmakers imagined. Or maybe they knew exactly what they were doing. Starts out by calling for a more realistic attitude to Hawaiian life, but not sure that's what was delivered. It would no doubt be an unfair simplification to say the moral was that revenge beats money. Some of the intergenerational stuff was definitely handled better than usual.

Clooneys best performance yet. If Seth Gecko is still somewhere inside of Clooney, he hides him well. Clooneys portrayal of the absent father who stuggles to understand and re-connect with his daughters is oscar worthy. Woodleys talent is beyond obvious and she's never outshined by Clooney. She's surely destined for more than TV. A diamond in the rough. Krause, Forster, Greer and Lillard all deserve a mentioning too. All this to the soundtrack of Hawaii and you have a decent movie.

I almost bailed on this movie. The narration was fucking atrocious, and it was tonally all wrong. Huge emotional scene, followed by a funny running scene with funny music, followed by another huge emotional scene. Blessedly, this all faded away 30 minutes or so into the film. Thoughtful and well written. Clooney is great as usual, and there are some touching scenes. But overall the movie didn't stick with me for some reason. It's only been about four months since I watched it and I actually had to read a plot synopsis to remember what happened. This movie is probably not the movie of the year but definitely a very good comedy drama. The story is strong and makes one smile at different instances of the movie. The only problem in the movie being the disconnect between the main plot of Matt King (Clooney) becoming the father he should have been and him dealing with his wife's infidelity and the plot about the pristine land that he is the trustee off. Acting by all is good especially Shailene Woodley. Good movie to watch.

I'm basically a sucker for a really good dramedy, and this is one of the best in some time. Every so often a little on-the-nose with the narration, but the screenplay does an incredible job at getting you invested in the lives of the characters. Clooney is playing the best role of his career, with Woodley and Forster other highlights. Payne, as usual, finds the perfect tone and balance between the two elements of the film. One of the best of the year, and my personal pick for Best Picture.

Payne avoids any contrived sentimentality in this often moving portrait of a father forced 2 deal w/ some of life's biggest issues. Like life, he avoids ascribing any real meaning 2 tragedy, but takes solace in the oldest maxims about the importance of family. The ending might carry more impact if it didn't feel so neat. It's hard 2 avoid thinking that if not 4 his wealth, Clooney's character's ineffectualness as a parent would leave things 4 this family far less pleasant than they r.

Clooney's relationship with his daughters was worthwhile material, but who could give a crap about the whole property empire / ancestors / inheritance subplot? Good script infused with Payne's own brand of dramedy. Story kept me interested from beginning till the end, at no point I could guess what exactly will happen. Intriguing characters, but Clooney starts to look the same character in every film he is. Very good use of setting - Hawaii really looks like a piece of paradise. Nothing important, but definitely worth spending couple hours on.

I really don't get what all the fuss is about.
