While it seems that "The Devil All The Time" had an exemplary script, some solid acting, and the budget and cinematography to back up a killer movie, this one just didn't quite come together. It was slow, and for the first hour or so, I kept wondering if this was supposed to be an anthology, and when it did come together, it just wasn't quite satisfying enough to justify the lengthy exposition.

Retelling of Huckleberry Finn. Goes a bit overboard and some plotlines feel a bit confused, but it has two subversive moments: normalized access to violence as following from magical thinking within a Netflix context, from which follows the second: magical thinking doesn't just simply follow from the war, the war itself is part of a deeper pattern of omnipresent violence. That is, the war doesn't take place against an idyllic frame but is an inevitable extension of its opposite.

Not the outright embarrassment I was prepared for, but a disappointment just the same, considering some of the talent involved (a few of whom, it should be noted, probably took less than a few days out of their schedules to shoot their scenes). Never for a moment does this feel like an "Antonio Campos film" as much as, well, a "Netflix film". The algorithm gets us all in the end, I suppose.

Antonio Campos' psychological thriller "The Devil All The Time" has a great cast, but is just too dark and depressing to be fully enjoyed. The film has great acting with an especially great performance from Harry Melling. Skarsgard, Holland and Pattinson are also great, but the performances can't save the movie from it's harsh tone and disturbing violence. This is a very well told story, it's just too bad that there is no hope or happiness in this film, just darkness, tragedy, death and sadness.

A carefully plotted, but sprawling film that criss-crosses between timelines and characters, impressively showing the changes in emotions, beliefs, and temperaments between two or more generations. This has its tonal difficulties (Pattinson's hilarious in this not hilarious film, and Holland's Gary Sue character isn't impressive), but all the superb acting really help this well told (and often rather morbid) yarn.

Wants the style and gravitas of TWBB and NCFOM but never gets there. The author himself supplies Coen-esque voice over but over-narrates until it becomes a Prairie Home Companion Halloween Special. I swear it doesn't have a moment of silent repose without "and so, Arlen thought to himself..." starting back up to break the spell.

Well-made, not just in its technical elements but in the way it deftly ties its many characters and generation-long plot threads together in such a satisfying (and ultimately surprisingly positive, as suspicion and violence give way to trust and sleep) manner, making for a powerfully morbid epic on the dangers of religion. That said, it's done through a distanced, fairy tale-like approach that prevents it from ever reaching emotional dramatic excellence despite solid turns by the whole cast.

Not totally without merit, but lacking in a certain emotional and narrative continuity that would foster interest. As such, it's a bit too long and relies on coincidence too much. Holland and Pattinson's confrontation is the highlight.

While never being bored, this star-studded Netflix vehicle is probably too long. Tom Holland gives the standout performance, but everyone is must have been been given the direction to "act sleepy." I think the post-WWII and pre-Vietnam era is ripe with story, the languid telling of these morose tales doesn't to amount to much more than a boy and his dog.

I really liked the way they expose the hypocrisy of religion and show horrible truths hiding behind the so-called faithful. The story moves quickly and the protagonists change often. The movie is bleak and deliberate. The acting performances are terrific. It has gruesome scenes and a serial killer couple for good measure. There is a lot of voice over. It keeps you interested, even though the pace seems slow at times and there's a lot of God talk. Worthwhile. but not suitable for children.

It's based on a novel and the taste of reading reaches your mind while watching the movie. It's subtle in action and narration. Don't let Edward from twilight deceive you. Robert Pattison's acting is superb in this movie. The use of deux ex machina may disturb the audience as you fill up with revenge through the movie.

This film uses every Appalachia trope in the book. These hillbilly movies are all the fucking same. I don't understand why this culture is so appealing to people. Perhaps because I know it well enough to know that this isn't honest. It's usually grossly misrepresented, and this film is no exception. Visually boring. Intellectually absent. Acting is so-so. Humans don't live here, just boring cliches you've seen a million times. Overall, FUCKING HELL! I HATE THIS MOVIE.

A haunting multi-layered story with plot threads that all connect in the finale. It’s slow paced and after the midpoint, I had to check the runtime left. Some of the subplots (there are MANY) were not as compelling as others, but everything sums up to a satisfying and redeeming ending. Watch it if for nothing else, absolute hard hitting performances of Holland, Skarsgård and Pattinson.
