I liked the subtext of the climax speech, but the more I think about this film, the more I see it as knowingly, maliciously depicting Arabs as cold-blooded, provincial, Israel-hating, imbecilic, homophobic pedophiles. As an Arab myself, an Arab to whom not a single one of those dehumanizing stereotypes applies in any way, this movie feels like a conscious message to society to see me as less of a person. I don't appreciate that at all. I also simply didn't find the film funny in the first place.

[Unrated version] The giving birth scene may be the best romantic bonding sequence for years. Loved the US dissing political speech, the helicopter scene, the terrorist Wii games, Edward Norton's cameo and the arabic soundtrack as well.

This looks crude and vulgar as it should be, but Charles and Cohen seem trapped in some sort of surrealistic slapstick comedy script, where the jokes come and go too fast, just to fill the empty spaces that bad acting and pacing leave throughout the narrative. I'd rather see a bad sequel to Borat than Aladeen's constant anxiety to please -- or to offend.

Unfortunately, for every good or funny moment there's at least one cringeworthy scene.

I laughed twice - the most of the made up wii games -"level unlocked: Munich 72". As with the other SBC movies they would have been better suited as sketches rather than feature films.

The conventional meet-cute love story at the center of The Dictator feels like a bizarre concession to some nonexistent demographic that prefers its sick black comedy with a side of humanist sentiment.

Watching Oscar winning actor Ben Kingsley kiss Sacha Baron Cohen's armpits pretty much summed up the entire movie: hilarious, over the top and totally ridiculous. Some of the jokes miss but many are really funny. The masturbation scene was pure gold. Nice to see Jason Mantzoukas get some work too, guy is great in The League

No where near as good as Cohens other films.

A bit too obvious at times (occasionally thuddingly obvious), and with too many reaches, to be as strong as Borat, but there's plenty of funny shit. I think I laughed every single time Cohen did that little head-chopping gesture.

Filled with bad old jokes, this doesn't earn one single laugh. Well done.

Surprisingly funny. Highlights: The islamification of the soundtrack, the helicopter ride, pretty much everything with Efawadh and - most of all - the restaurant scenes, where Aladeen makes up fake names.

The first few minutes my feelings about this movie were pretty Aladeen since there were some clever gags, but the humor quickly became crude and painfully juvenile which left a very Aladeen impression.

Like others have said, the jokes are hit or miss, and the pacing makes the film feel rushed and unfocused. Most of all, what separates this from the brilliant Borat and Bruno is the lack of interaction with real people; instead we get dozens of cameos from actors/comedians who deserved better material. But perhaps due to his fame and the subject matter, it was difficult for even SBC to push that envelope?

Sacha Baron Cohen has an skill of being extremely offensive, while still being pretty funny as well. The problem is he sets that bar so high that only the most abrasive jokes are the ones that earn real laughs in 'The Dictator'. This film isn't as quotable as his last movies. A blessing in disguise, you can only hear so many bad Borat impressions before you explode. The soundtrack is excellent. Even though you expect the twist at the beginning of each song, it's still hilarious. Decent flick.

Much better than Bruno where Coen lost himself but far weaker than Borat. Still, The Dictator is juicy peace of offbeat humor, mocking of liberal douche bags and over politically correct world.

overrated | 44 38th |
Cohen struggles to move away from his established characters, with an overreliance on dick/poop humor and references to recent events in the Middle East. If you still have an inner fifteen year old it's alright but doesn't come close to touching his earlier stuff.

Spotty comedy has its share of decent chuckles, but strikes an awkward and uncertain balance between a sketch revue and more traditional com/rom-com narrative – the plot is too flimsy and underdeveloped to hold interest between the gags, and the gags are not rapid-fire enough to propel the film past the stodgier bits. It doesn’t help that many of the gags are too contrived and laborious in their set-up (read: the 9/11 2012 gag). Some well chosen and utilised cameos definitely help.

Funny, but not much progression... It feels like they set up a basic plot and then it's just a series of funny things strung together.

Living up to the expectations set by BORAT has been difficult for Sacha Baron Cohen, and THE DICTATOR, an obvious large budget and rich source material aside, is too brisk and throwaway to make a lasting impact. But as a farce, it's still fairly funny. General Aladeen isn't much different from Borat, but Baron Cohen's relish in the role is obvious (Ben Kingsley, however, is stuck with yet another thankless role), and Anna Faris isn't bad either. Best moment: Aladeen's discovery of self-pleasure.

This movie works best when it is dealing with satire. There are some funny jokes but many of the gross out moments in the film fall flat. There are numerous fun cameos but they do not make up for some weak parts in the script. The conclusion of romance part of the movie is average. Overall the uneven script and too many unfunny moments brings this movie down.

I was looking for something smarter from Larry Charles and Cohen. There were three big laughs from this film but the rest was boring and the scenes transitioned poorly. I expected more from a comedy loosely based on a book by Saddam Hussein...
