I liked the subtext of the climax speech, but the more I think about this film, the more I see it as knowingly, maliciously depicting Arabs as cold-blooded, provincial, Israel-hating, imbecilic, homophobic pedophiles. As an Arab myself, an Arab to whom not a single one of those dehumanizing stereotypes applies in any way, this movie feels like a conscious message to society to see me as less of a person. I don't appreciate that at all. I also simply didn't find the film funny in the first place.

This looks crude and vulgar as it should be, but Charles and Cohen seem trapped in some sort of surrealistic slapstick comedy script, where the jokes come and go too fast, just to fill the empty spaces that bad acting and pacing leave throughout the narrative. I'd rather see a bad sequel to Borat than Aladeen's constant anxiety to please -- or to offend.

Cohen struggles to move away from his established characters, with an overreliance on dick/poop humor and references to recent events in the Middle East. If you still have an inner fifteen year old it's alright but doesn't come close to touching his earlier stuff.

Watching Oscar winning actor Ben Kingsley kiss Sacha Baron Cohen's armpits pretty much summed up the entire movie: hilarious, over the top and totally ridiculous. Some of the jokes miss but many are really funny. The masturbation scene was pure gold. Nice to see Jason Mantzoukas get some work too, guy is great in The League

This movie works best when it is dealing with satire. There are some funny jokes but many of the gross out moments in the film fall flat. There are numerous fun cameos but they do not make up for some weak parts in the script. The conclusion of romance part of the movie is average. Overall the uneven script and too many unfunny moments brings this movie down.

Another Sacha Baron Cohen misfire, The Dictator is a crude comedy that has a few moments of brilliance but on the whole isn't anywhere near funny enough to warrant even the paltry amount of running time it's been given. Cohen's great at getting into character, but most of the jokes just aren't that good, and the whole premise wears thin by the halfway mark.

Like others have said, the jokes are hit or miss, and the pacing makes the film feel rushed and unfocused. Most of all, what separates this from the brilliant Borat and Bruno is the lack of interaction with real people; instead we get dozens of cameos from actors/comedians who deserved better material. But perhaps due to his fame and the subject matter, it was difficult for even SBC to push that envelope?

Sacha Baron Cohen has an skill of being extremely offensive, while still being pretty funny as well. The problem is he sets that bar so high that only the most abrasive jokes are the ones that earn real laughs in 'The Dictator'. This film isn't as quotable as his last movies. A blessing in disguise, you can only hear so many bad Borat impressions before you explode. The soundtrack is excellent. Even though you expect the twist at the beginning of each song, it's still hilarious. Decent flick.

Living up to the expectations set by BORAT has been difficult for Sacha Baron Cohen, and THE DICTATOR, an obvious large budget and rich source material aside, is too brisk and throwaway to make a lasting impact. But as a farce, it's still fairly funny. General Aladeen isn't much different from Borat, but Baron Cohen's relish in the role is obvious (Ben Kingsley, however, is stuck with yet another thankless role), and Anna Faris isn't bad either. Best moment: Aladeen's discovery of self-pleasure.

Spotty comedy has its share of decent chuckles, but strikes an awkward and uncertain balance between a sketch revue and more traditional com/rom-com narrative – the plot is too flimsy and underdeveloped to hold interest between the gags, and the gags are not rapid-fire enough to propel the film past the stodgier bits. It doesn’t help that many of the gags are too contrived and laborious in their set-up (read: the 9/11 2012 gag). Some well chosen and utilised cameos definitely help.

It's perfectly clear that Sacha Baron Cohen will never produce anything close to the level of Ali G ever again. "The Dictator" is however an undoubted improvement on "Brüno" simply because it doesn't have an awkward mix of real and fake mockumentary material and situations. There's no pretence here, this movie is just SBC having a laugh, and to be fair there are plenty of those, even if there is little else to praise.

Not as good as Borat, but way better than his other films. With The Dictator, SBC returns to his winning (Kazakh) ways: shocking and funny - not all throughout the film, but when the film aims to hit, it hits hard. I really didn't like how the plot became far more politically correct as the movie progressed, even to the point where they needed the protagonist to act as soapbox and compare a common dictatorship to western democracy... which we're expected to take seriously after the barrge of penis and poop jokes.

While the character itself is pretty funny at times, this movie shows that Cohen is best while unscripted and interacting with "normal people", ie. bigots. The romance part of this movie is really stupid and unbelieveable, and the jokes are crude and juvenile. It's a return to completely scripted comedy, like "Ali G Indahouse", which means it lacks something that made Borat and Bruno fun (and SBC's TV show)... and it's a familiar brand of comedy, harking back to stuff like Eddie Murphy's "Coming to America"... but it's undoubtedly funny stuff, with a dab of biting political commentary. Editing is a bit choppy. It still catches me off guard when Cohen speaks in Hebrew, passing it off to generally unwitting audiences as gibberish in another language.

How did so many funny people come together to make something so painfully average? Even small roles are played by super funny people (ie. Seth Morris as the newborn's dad), but most of them are not given jokes to work with, instead playing grounded foils for Aladeen to bounce off. It's a waste and a real shame, as so many of the jokes fall flat. There are a handful of gags that hit hard though, and Mantzoukas acquits himself very well in his first major role. Just what one has come to expect from Larry Charles and Sacha Baron Cohen, "The Dictaror" is a very funny film. The satire is articulate, the humour is mostly inspired and the script is solid, there being no plot holes disguised by ugly jokes, no silly ending for the box office and no parts that drag because the writers ran out of steam halfway or something.
