Scientist proves existence of afterlife, prompting a mass of suicides before somebody finally realizes that jumpers forfeit their golden ticket up the glass elevator to heaven. This movie's biggest flaw is that it assumes people believe in science, an assumption that has been scientifically proven to be false.

I throroughly enjoyed 'The One I Love', so I had high hopes for this one. However, even though the ideas that McDowell explores should have been right up my alley, he didn't manage to woo me this time around. But while I found the film somewhat unsatisfying, I did, at least, appreciate that - unlike most of the stuff out there that we've seen a hundred thousand times before - it's its own thing.

Thought provoking and interesting premise, but gets bogged down with mediocre writing and doesn't quite go as far as I had hoped into answering the questions it brings up. It's original and will keep you interested, though.

A great premise that could have (and does in some instances) given way to a contemplative and beautiful film about the meaning of life, what drives us as a species to fight and continue living everyday. The Discovery ends up being a slightly more "scientific" version of The butterfly effect, with very little of its most interesting themes explored beyond them serving as exposition. Truly a shame.

Interesting at times but it doesn't really think it's world and concepts through and just sort of falls apart the more you think about it. In general it presents a confusing and very self centered view of the universe.

It's just so dull and lifeless. It doesn't fully explore its main concept, every other line of dialogue seems to be some form of exposition and then the big reveal at the end just comes out of nowhere and is fairly confusing. Everyone is pretty dreary in this too and just seem to mope about from scene to scene. Points for the afterlife stuff but everything else didn't really float my boat.

Starts off with such a big interesting idea the rest can't help but seem a little slow. It's still unique and has a talented cast.

the start is stronger than the finish, but I admire the audacity to end it the way it did.

Didn't hate it especially because i think the premise of a proven afterlife is catchy (but not without problems), but i hated Jason Segel who i have seen in roles better suited to his talents! What a horrible and tonedeaf performance, it's just completely unbelievable he's a doctor irl. Has Jason Segel ever seen a doctor? Is he the healthiest man on the planet so he hasn't? I know within the plot he needs to be a little washed out but come on, i wanted to smack him around. What a downer.

While The Discovery never quite makes the jump from good to great, it's a more-than-interesting-enough movie to hold your attention. It's smart and contemplative enough to make you think even after it ends, it's got good acting, and it generates enough goodwill with its premise and opening scene to hold you for its entire running time. It's original, unpolished, and relatively entertaining filmmaking that will stimulate your synapses.

It's so sad to see that kind of marvellous and promising plot became such an unexceptional piece of ridiculous ending involved film. The Discovery is probably one of the good examples for ruining the concept which everyone was ready to experience something new, different, unorthodox. Yet already it might be a flick every young filmmakers can take a lesson from to realise what they shouldn't do.

Superb premise, but one which can only lead to painting itself into a corner. Satisfying ending nonetheless.

Interesting as a "what if" story and has the balls to put forth a good sci-fi premise with a little bit of explanation behind it, something most similar movies would leave far to vague. While I might sound a little hypocritical, the issue is that this one might try to give answers and explore the ramifications of the premise, but everything just keeps getting muddier as it goes.

Doesn't really make sense to me, The direction it takes is contrary to the message I thought it would try to convey based on the early parts. Chemistry wasn't really there either.

Utterly forgettable. Desperately wants to be the thinkpiece/tragedy of Eternal Sunshine, but is just braindead (pun intended)

Loved the melancholy atmosphere, but the screenplay was pretty oversimplified and the transitions and motivations for character backstory/development/actions are not really explained. Weirdly, I remember thinking to myself "This girl talks JUST like Zooey Barnes from House of Cards, but it's definitely not her." ... it was her sister in real life, lol. Interesting how siblings can speak similarly. Also, I TOTALLY appreciated the alt-j ending credits song.

Falls flat. Love the subject. Interesting way of looking at the afterlife I guess. Still a decent movie though.

Lost momentum in the middle and ending was needlessly convoluted. But Segel sold me on a more serious and dramatic performance.

It takes a while to really reach the full scope of what is actually happening. While doing so it allows Redford, Mara, Segel and others to create an interesting enough science to get behind. As it plays out it sort of diminishes the science behind the original concept and tries to become a mind bending experience of trying to understand what is truly happening. It is during the final act you begin to actually lose focus on caring and you just want to see how bizarre it ends up being.
