The Dish and The Spoon

Not nearly as quirky faux-indie as the promo materials would suggest (that poster, ugh) but rather a pensive, mostly low-key mublecore-ish drama thing. It's actually very much on the same wavelength as Quiet City, albeit with a different setting, more assured aesthetics, and somewhat more contrived characters and situations (Alexander is, at best, like a teenager who's seen Harold & Maude one too many times). Like that film, it's too minor to be anything amazing but it's very sweet and charming.

That it's a more earnest and restrained corrective of its pedigree than THE COLOR WHEEL inevitably saps it of some potency on that front, but the ways in which the first act gender-bending reverberate through subsequent developments (the voicemail, the "real" first kiss, the old-timey photo sesh) firmly establish Bagnall as an able cinescold of amiable sweetness, as both opposed & correlative to the sublime savagery of Gallo & Perry.
