Works depiste the script that thinks it's more intelligent than it supposes. Martinez delivers as intelectual caught up in series of embarassing (and vicious) situations in his hometown. It's both a self-conscious examination of bourgeois guilt and a chronicle of heart-warming and egregious things we see in tiny cities. Comic bits resonate more than the finale - a film divided in chapters (!) that happens to be the new book he wrote (all we saw might be truth or fiction, who cares).
