Not bad, but lots of easy answers.

Okay, this movie is not great. It's a barely-adequate remake of Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, except that a huckster becomes a good guy, instead of a naive guy becoming a patriot. This was the start of Eddie Murphy's barely funny stage in movie life, where he's only about 1/10 as funny as the Eddie Murphy pre-1986.

This may be Murphy's last funny movie. It's not _Mr. Smith Goes to Washington_ (which is a bad *and* good thing), but it's entertaining, and has some interesting things to say about American politics

Con man-style takeoff on _Mr. Smith Goes to Washington_. The first two-thirds of the movie, with an accent on comedy, are the best.

I was kind of entertained by this. I may have been watching it in the middle of the night while sleep deprived though.

Cynical and sarcastic but poor of good ideas and characters. It also gives in to clichés too early to be taken seriously, even as a comedy motivated by Eddie Murphy's charisma, still solid, still reminding us of his great 1980s.

Frighteningly prophetic as Eddie Murphy's adversary in Congress, Dick Dodge, might as well be Dick Cheney right down to the hunting scenes. This is a lame screwball comedy that is brilliant in hindsight, albeit possibly inadvertently...

A serviceable Murphy vehicle made during the transitional phase of his career, T.D.G finds Murphy toning down his act, which blunted his comic edge, setting the stage for future blandness. Thankfully Murphy performs with some enthusiasm, charming his way through scenes that are often quite questionably written. While the film does attempt to skewer corruption in Congress, it isn't clever enough to be a satire and it's too straight laced to really work as a farce. In a word: middling.

While the broad outline may be familiar and predictable, this good-natured comedy is made memorable not going down the POLICE ACADEMY shenanigans road, rather presenting Murphy as a credibly inexperienced Congressman who genuinely learns and plays ball, assisted by a terrific supporting cast all ideally chosen to inhabit their roles. Given such an intelligent and witty screenplay, this could have skirted into greatness; sluggish pacing drags things down somewhat (especially in the mid-section).
