Initially I wrote a mini-review that made some sort of childish remark regarding Michael Pitt's schlong but then I realised the movie itself was about people being stuck in a childish and sexually immature way of life and how necessary it is to break free from that and now I am confused and feel slightly embarrassed. Damnit.

Masturbatory nonsense. Despicable characters do despicable things, and Bertolucci overindulges in every way possible. From the constant name dropping and film clips to the needlessly explicit sex, this lacks a degree of subtlety that could help it more effectively capture the political and social unrest.

The film is partly Bertolucci's lovesong to the French New Wave and classic cinema, and that part works. It's like a Godard film in reverse: appropriating the the joie de vivre of Bande à Part which was in turn Godard whimsically showing his appreciation for American cinema. However, the film also makes attempts at sexual exploration and social commentary, at which it is a bit less adroit. The commentary seems rather inserted and is only relevant insofar as it relates to the political clima

The Dreamers kind of made me feel ambiguous. It sure shows potential: photography wise, Eva Green, soundtrack, ... . But is also has some disappointments: the vague political background, the far too dramatic ending, and the lack of different scenery. ... Mmm, maybe it should have been better with this setting and with these idea's.

The scenery of Paris in '68 fits perfect to this story of love and friendship when portrayed by Bertolucci. A story that has got a severe tension ever since due to different political and emotional points of view. But this is more than just this beautiful story, it is Bertoluccis declaration of love for cinema in general which according to him can be part of a modern enlightment with its powerful combination of sound and vision. Hard to disagree after this movie...

We must leave aside the taboos to see - what is difficult. It can be seen as a "scientific experiment" or the construction of a world playful, all within an apartment. Experiments and results. How far can we go? What is true? What allows our minds? The result is never the end but just the beginning of the quest to overcome new limits. Exit to the world of rules is painful, contrasting with the world inside the apartment.

Splendid! This proves ''Every Movie is not for Everybody''. The movie clearly tells about the interlinking realtionships and obsession that is involved in it. That was a brave step by Eva Green to do a movie like this at the start of her career.

I want to say something epic about this film, but no words come to mind that justify how I feel. Desire in multiple forms. An examination of the Human Condition. Sex, for everything that it is and isn't. Two boys, one girl, and no presumptions of what that situation should mean, only what it became.

There are themes of flesh and politics running throughout the film, and while they are OK, they never surpass or come close to achieving the poignancy of the films that so obviously inspired The Dreamers. The political undertones are sparse and nowhere near as challenging or resolute as something like La Chinoise and the study of the flesh never comes close to the delicate artfulness of something like Une Femme Mariee. Even with those shortcomings, it's still a genuinely enjoyable film.

What a prententious and crappy movie. It confirms the French sterotypes (why?) as arrogant and conceited people. Just because it has some movie references, naked ass and titties it is a great film? Bwah, I am disappointed in all these hight tier ratings for this one. Even the ending is stupid, I wish she managed to gass all of them.

Huge philosophical and political concepts are examined with such little follow-through it becomes increasingly clear that Bertolucci was more focused on having a nostalgia trip than making a pointed or even sensible film. Sexually immature and regressive twins draw another into the hermetic universe of their apartment. They discuss their "very own cultural revolution" found in film, images and reflections, eroticism, aesthetics vs. politics. All they want is to retreat into the cinema; a microcosm; the womb. Separation anxiety manifests in sex-as-death-wish, perversion as a retreat from life's madness and banality. Ultimately, the cinematic "reality" outside forces them to grow up, to act out in absurdity.

A handful of shortcomings doesn't stall The Dreamers from what it is - A bold, beautiful, zany, and sexually charged motion picture that leaves the viewer flabbergasted, either way. It is not everyday that we come across a movie with a beauty which is this poetic and the narration, such lyrical. Easily among Bertolucci's best.

Beautiful music, beautiful images and beautiful people compose "The Dreamers", a suitably sexy and electrifying examination of a particular era that brims with cinema love. Betrolucci's direction is as operatic and assured as ever, the chemistry between the leads is titillating and the soundtrack literally rocks. Still, the film doesn't go anywhere, as the final third is disappointingly confused and the last scene frustratingly pointless.

Eva Green is totally off the hook, naked and stunning. Louis Garrel was adequate. Michael Pitt is good as the young American student caught up in a weird and wonderful dreamlike relationship with the two of them. Eva plays a girl with a strange way of looking at the world, as does her brother, and the three of them have a truly unique relationship. I really disliked the ending, and so much spoken French without subtitles.

Persuasive, believeable evocation of the student protest movement in late 60s Paris (and the film buff culture of the time) is fascinating for about an hour while the philosophies of its central characters are explored. Unfortunately the second half turns into a somewhat tired retread of material covered far more successfully by Bertolucci in LAST TANGO, and while the performances are fine (and Green outstanding), the film eventually sinks under its grandstanding speechifying.

Feeding off the glories of past cinema is a dicey proposition at best. THE DREAMERS is not a best-case scenario. An American student in 1968 Paris (Michael Pitt) becomes involved with a pair of twins (Eva Green, Louis Garrel), based upon a shared love of cinema. Things grow increasingly complex as social unrest intensifies. A promising idea that crumbles under the weight of its dull characters, Michael Pitt's weak performance, and continual reminders of far superior films. Bad move, Bertolucci.

can't say i agreed with the whole "incest" side of it, but as a story about three youths in a revolutionary france it was definitely engaging. the era they portrayed, the lifestyle was mesmerizing. overall i think this film was fun and depicted a very nostalgic, artsy view of the 1960s, and did a fantastic job offsetting the youths' relationship and personal escapades with the revolution that was going on outside their doors.

The Dreamers is a film looking to emulate a specific period in time in Paris' history. The 1968 riots were an important time and this film does a good job of capturing the spirit and energy of the time. Sex, politics, cinema. It's a sexually explicit film with little plot and characters who exist as surrogates for the film's point. It's an art house film through and through, and I recommend it to that crowd, as you won't see another film like this one.
