The Duel

A mumbling, meandering Western about a Texas Ranger tracking the man who killed his father in a knife fight 20 years before. Woody Harrelson's charmingly monstrous character so obviously draws inspiration from The Judge of Cormac McCarthy's "Blood Meridian" that it's impossible not to compare the two, a comparison which will always favor McCarthy's bleak brilliance. Also, Liam Hemsworth has neither the screen presence nor the acting chops to anchor a serious film.

The Duel (2016) has a solid production and a couple of well-known names attached to it. Doesn't stop it from being a bore, though, even if they go The Most Dangerous Game on some poor Mexicans. Just very little outside of the two leads and people in general didn't have the best of chemistry in a slow moving psychological western at the border. Disappointing. Had potential.

Woody Harrelson is a great actor who makes some horrible movies. This has some great scenery and some decent shoot outs but it is still a horrible movie.

It's got some good moments and an interesting conflict, but it drags the plot out for far too long. At some points it grows tedious, just to momentarily pick up again. Liam Hemsworth is kind of tagging along and not providing much while Woody Harrelson owns the role of the cold-blooded leader of a backwoods cult. Too bad it didn't use the potential that it had due to the script being slow as molasses.
