An astronomer of age, wealth, and erudition conducts classes in his home. His students are not always respectful, and he suffers their pranks and high jinks. Then, at noon, everything darkens and the astronomer hurries upstairs to his telescope. It is an eclipse of the sun, and through his glass, he sees a female moon coming toward a masculine sun, flirting as they move closer to what becomes a consummation. (imdb)

The story is pretty basic but the set are great and the film was interesting until the actual eclipse scene took me out of the film. The short couldn't really come back from that.

The eclipse itself is memorable, and then we get 5 minutes of weird bullshit. Even weirder than a goblin faced sun fucking a female moon doggy style. The fact this is listed as a romance is quite bizarre.

Ah thee French... I'd heard of mooning someone but I never pictured it like this! Although you'll never envision an eclipse the same way again, and there's some pretty good slapstick, this is overall a bit of a task to get through with people ridding cardboard props as they slowly creep across the screen. Worth seeing once.

A basically dumb movie that briefly comes to life due to Melies's charmingly strange depiction of the heavens. Featuring what I believe is the first ever depiction of cunnilingus in a motion picture, however obliquely. In a "real" film, that is. (I wonder how much movie pornography had already been produced by 1907)
