Everyone knows that growing up is hard, and life is no easier for high school junior Nadine (Hailee Steinfeld), who is already at peak awkwardness when her all-star older brother Darian (Blake Jenner) starts dating her best friend Krista (Haley Lu Richardson). All at once, Nadine feels more alone than ever, until the unexpected friendship of a thoughtful boy (Hayden Szeto) gives her a glimmer of hope that things just might not be so terrible after all. Hailee Steinfeld was entirely marvelous. The writing was engaging and interesting throughout. All of the supporting cast was quite good, with Woody Harrelson in a standout role as the cool teacher. Overall, its a nice balance of engaging characters and comedic situations. I have a new found appreciation for Kelly Fremon Craig as a writer and director.

Fairly charming, with fine performances from Steinfeld and Harrelson, but in the end no more than an above-average example of an overpopulated genre.

"Wow, I'm one of those people who think everything is about them." Steinfeld is excellent; starts out as a regular sarcastic-teen-outsider drama, then gradually starts peeling back the layers and doesn't even really need an antagonist apart from its own protagonist's demons. The ending could have stood to be a bit grimier, but hey.

You would be mistaken to think of this as another teenager drama-romance. It is that and some more. There is a dysfunctional family thrown in as well. However, the best part of the movie is the Nadine (Hailee) and her battling the demons inside her head. I enjoyed her character considerably. Sort of what you may have really seen in some 17 year olds.

I love its sarcastic sense of humor, but also its heart as it seeks to show us something vital about what it means to grow up and mature. Nadine's use of her father's death (among many other things) as a crutch to sustain her own solipsism is bitingly true to life. But the film refuses to let her off the hook in the name of compassion--it consistently reveals the consequences of her behavior, and shows that self-centeredness leaves one isolated from true connection.

The Edge of Seventeen is a standard coming-of-age tale that retreads conventional plotlines, but differentiates itself in its acerbic wit delivered primarily by Steinfeld and Harrelson. Oddly enough Richardson's character is the most relatable and reasonable. Steinfeld's protagonist is an infuriating mix of narcissism, insecurities and indulgence that make her engaging to watch, while sadly defining a generation. Teen angst countered by shared difficulties; an enjoyable film, but a shallow one.

There’s nothing much new in this coming-of-age movie, but it still felt fresh. It has a smart, witty script, and tells a nice, simple story. I think a lot of it has to do with Hailee Steinfeld though. She’s really good in this, making her character really likable and relatable. Also have to give props to Woody Harrelson, who’s great, as always. It’s just a nice film, with a healthy dose of emotion, and does a decent job at capturing what it’s like to be a teenager.

Outstanding coming-of-age drama stands with the best of the genre, thanks to a perfect cast all bar none rising to the occasion. Anchored by Steinfeld's astonishing balancing act of fragile obnoxiousness, but Harrelson's wry and dry school teacher and Sedgwick's unexpectedly nuanced portrait of a harridian-ish mother are equally impressive. Craig's screenplay does a terrific job of demonising nobody, making this one of the fullest and most well-rounded portraits of teen life since ELECTION.

Steinfeld is a revelation here, she is lovably awkward and is paired with the most authentic teen dialogue I've heard in years. The supporting cast aren't stock characters either, we see dynamic change from nearly everyone. Edge of Seventeen is excellently paced, hilarious, and while it can be a bit predictable and clichéd, those moments are delivered with such honesty and conviction. Suddenly a tidy ending doesn't seem ridiculous.

I think this could go down as one of the better films of its type in the last decade or so, a real surprise for me. It doesn't do anything new but it's funny and comes across as genuine. It's also not afraid to make some edgy jokes. Steinfeld is a gem here, putting it on her back. A charming coming-of-age flick.

You might call it John Hughesian, but this is much more Linklater in unique ways. Nadine has full control of her narrative, even when it punishes her -- or she thinks she is doomed. Not coming of age cautionary tale bullshit. And the warm details -- the teacher who actually makes good money and is happy, the older-football-jock bro who is actually nice and gentle, the bff who is not the betraying bitch she thinks she is, Nad likes Futurama, Mr Lincoln, Aimee Mann falls for a rich filmmaker!

It's easy to see why critical acclaim didn't translate into box office. While it has great performances, some laughs & carves out a "realistic" portrayal of a flawed teen girl, the problem is that she's the only genuinely fleshed out character on the screen w/ every other character existing only to patiently indulge her exhausting whims & tantrums. As irritating as she becomes, the film simultaneously never explains why she can't make friends w/ any number of the other jerky teens in the world.
