The Electrical Life of Louis Wain

Any film covering decades of a life will sag in places just by nature of its acts being so distinct; a couple will stand out, others will be in their shadow. The central portion of this film is its highlight: the quirky, lovely meeting of Louis and Emily, and Louis’ decline by virtue of the highlight feels somewhat dragged out. But it’s all well-acted, prettily shot and designed, and the theremin was a nice touch in the soundtrack.

This one has pretty much completely slipped below the radar, but I really really dug this lightly psychedelic oddity. Fans of Iannucci’s Personal History of David Copperfield will find a lot to enjoy here. It’s another period piece through a daffy lens with a mildly anarchic spirit. It’s a little messy, but I’m a sucker for its bold stylistic choices. The cast is great, Arthur Sharpe’s score is delightful, and the visuals are quite intoxicating. Not for everyone, but I was super charmed.

It's the visual execution of Cumberbutter's Electric Dooha that sets it apart, as well as the creative presentation of Wain's descent into madness. I don't like cats much, so I guess it says something that overall I thought this was pretty good. It's certainly a whole lot better than any film covering the origins of the great cat obsession has any right to be. Is it fair to say that Mr. Wain is responsible for internet horrors such as Nyan Cat?

Felt too much like 'theatre' for me to ever get into it.

A quirky historical rom-com that devolves into a quirky historical tragedy. I don't think the quirky overlay transitions well to the latter half that is basically misery topped on misery.

Probably as close as we're gonna get to a biopic of Job. With cats!

I decided to watch this without knowing much, expecting a light-hearted movie about an eccentric man. I have cried for half the movie. I'll sue Amazon for emotional damage.

Lovely beginning, but estranges its viewers with the second half.
