The horological significance of the UK title, ESCAPEMENT, had no place in the film, but the book, also called The Man Who Couldn't Sleep, while no masterpiece, may be the most prophetic novel ever written. Containing the remarkable manifesto on "unlife", it tells of the rise of a global transhumanist control society in which dream technology is the "escapement mechanism that is allowing the mainspring of humanity to run down", threatening to "undermine every [...] governmental structure".
