Heresy alert: I'm beginning to think that if you've seen one noble proletarian leads an uprising over the evil avaricious capitalist robber-barons movie, you've seen them all. Yes, Pudovkin assembles some striking montages, but eighty years on, it all seems like an angry wasp slamming against the walls of the jar in which it's been encased.

A very well made movie for its time with excellent battle scenes and some pretty good moments of acting. The story is very chopped up and can be hard to follow at times but still admirably tells the history of the October Revolution (kinda).

Not quite as viscerally impactful as Mother, still a very strong effort. The scenes during the war are particularly good.

I don't know what to say specifically about this movie. I can't recall any details. I just love Soviet cinema from the silent era. I don't think this is probably that profound necessarily, but it's a cold shower for the senses and invigorating and that's enough.

Not that different from the other 'proletariat standing up for themselves and then a lot of people die' pieces I've seen, which unfortunately takes a lot of wind out of its sails. The montages were good, but I was not that engaged by the events taking place. ..Though that's probably because my knowledge of Russian history leaves something to be desired.

I can't comment on its effectiveness as a propoganda piece, especially because there were times when I wasn't quite sure who I was meant to be rooting for. But the camerawork is fantastic, with montages and compositions that rival the best work of Eisenstein. The narrative, although occasionally confusing, was strong and the actors didn't ham it up too much. Amazing battle scenes as well.

war against war! these conditions are still intimately entwined with today, and this film helps me center my perspective even still. obviously many of its stances are dated, but like, compared to other tepid critiques of the military industrial complex? compared to other post-war art? this film kills

A messy, party-approved script that tries to be both monumental and intimate in just 80 minutes and gets lost. But the visuals are incredible; the workers dwarfed by monuments, the machines SHOWING noise on the screen, the charging soldiers intercut with stock brokers, struggling men falling dead as the shares rise... How about a US remake set in the Cheney era, hmmm? Kidding, kidding.
