Linda Sinclair (Julianne Moore) is a forty-year-old unmarried high school English teacher in the small town of Kingston, Pennsylvania. She shares a small apartment with two Siamese cats and her rich collection of great literature. She maintains no close personal relationships aside from those she has with her favorite authors and stories. Her life is far less complicated than the dramas she devours on the page, and she likes it that way. (imdb)

A decent film which completely subverts any expectations you have going in by being a completely different film

For some reason this movie employs some over the top sing song-ey fairy tale narrator. In the last 5 minutes the narrator decides to start accosting the main character and commenting on the plot, Stranger than Fiction style. This happens for absolutely no reason. I can only assume that this was an attempt to spruce up the INCREDIBLY predictable ending. Our main character meets a handsome divorcé in the first 15 minutes of the movie. TAKE A WILD GUESS WHAT HAPPENS AT THE END.

The main character is someone I don't understand, the writer is just a crazy person and (the ending is) way too predictable! Not good, not good....

An interesting little laugh-heavy dramedy with a goofy tone that then goes to some dark-ish places, while mostly maintaining the lighter feel. It doesn't try to be ambiguous or go over your head. I loved the "In the words of David Mamet, 'FUCK YOU'!" line. The omniscient narrator serves as a fun little quirk. Sure (mostly) everything wraps up in a neat little package at the end but hey, that doesn't automatically translate to "bad". It's a three-act fairy tale people! Not the best, but it works.

'The English Teacher' commits three basic sins: it's not very funny, it's not very heartfelt, and it contains few surprises. These factors overwhelm the generally good performances and leave the film feeling dull and procedural in spots.
