The Entertainer

Finely tuned, somewhat chilling drama presents Olivier in a tour-de-force performance as an ageing, pathetic paen to the old catchphrase 'the show must go on'. Entire cast is sensational (with DeBanzie's breakdown scene a show-stopper) but it is Olivier's show, intensely underplaying his tragic character. Richardson's simple direction (in stark B&W) also a major asset.

everything roger livesey touches turns to gold, but even he takes a back seat to laurence olivier's stalwart performance as a man who takes all of life's troubles right on the chin and keeps on going. it's sad, depressing, and powerful. archie rice is the very personification of the human spirit.

Olivier is nice and all but even he can't eliminate the boringness of this kitchen sink drama.

Perhaps Olivier's greatest non-Shakespearean film role. A mesmerising portrayal of a desperate man struggling and eventually failing to mask the tragedy with laughter. Terribly sad.

Vida de Solteiro estreava há 60 anos nos EUA. Isso é de fato uma excelente alegoria pela decadência do Império Britânico como foi do intento do autor da peça, mas também não pode-se deixar de fazer um paralelo com o próprio Olivier, um ator bissexual que está tentando parecer "vivo" na New Wave. Plus: Tô tentando decifrar o porquê raios desse filme ter o nome de "Vida de Solteiro" no Brasil, mas tudo bem. Box Versátil Nouvelle Vague Britânica.
