The Exorcism of Emily Rose

2005
Drama, Suspense/Thriller

In an extremely rare decision, the Catholic Church officially recognized the demonic possession of a 19 year-old college freshman. The Exorcism of Emily Rose chronicles the haunting trial of the priest accused of negligence resulting in the death of the young girl believed to be possessed. Inspired by true events, the film stars Laura Linney as the lawyer who takes on the task of defending the priest (Wiklinson) who performed the controversial exorcism. (Sony)

It is not a fact that the director was sincere in his belief that the courtroom-drama structure meant he could concoct a RASHOMON-style presentation of multiple perspectives in order to provoke audiences to ask themselves spiritual questions: but is it possible? The real questions raised by the film concern the ethics of framing its subject matter in these terms, given not only the nature of the case on which it claims to be based, but others since then that have had similar outcomes.

Tom Wilkinson is great as always and I think the exorcism-scenes are pretty good. Then being a courtroom-film, I normally expect the worst, but I think it let's us have the plot in a nice tempo. It spoils it's own ending though, which I always hate a bit. But other than that it was a pleasant surprise, fair to say.

Thoughtful, unexploitive, engrossing, petrifying, and visually stunning from start to finish, the film recalls a time when the Hollywood moviemaking system was willing to take chances and make works of cinematic art with more on the brain than just frivolous, throwaway flatulence jokes, explosions, and threadbare jump scares. This has more on the brain than that, and pays off with a rare complexity that services the frightening moments to stunning effect. One of the very best films of 2005.

You gotta love a movie that goes out of its way to not only turn a real-life murder into a cheap horror movie, but also to exonorate the real-life murderers. ...Oh, wait, no you don't.

It's A TIME TO KILL meets THE EXORCIST - and as tonally odd (and intriguing) as that sounds. While the contrast between the two genres occasionally, perhaps deliberately clash (especially contrasting the methodical logic of the court case with Linney's midnight visitations), this is still an interesting effort and a novel (and serious minded) way to present supernatural events; helped immeasurably by a first-rate cast in top form.

Smarter and more psychologically horrifying than anyone could have anticipated, this film surpasses the movie it is often mistaken as a remake of by miles. Emily Rose is a horrifying far more believably possessed girl than Reagan could have ever hoped to be. Not only that but this movie has far more substance and provokes far more thought for anyone who has ever contemplated the line between religion and reality, or contemplated whether that line even truly exists.

Somewhat slow, this film about the controversial exorcism of a young girl shows a mostly balanced viewpoint of medical and spiritual reasons for her condition. So much potential ruined within a too long two hours. What could have been a creepy exorcism film (though still average), became a less than average "court-room-drama". Whoever had the awful idea to tell the story of an exorcism through a lawyer should just stop writing films. Jennifer Carpenter created a beautiful character, and never once displayed anything less than acting gold, yet she alone could not overcome the awful writing, and acting employed throughout the film. It's not in my wheelhouse to watch many horror films. Luckily, the frightening scenes are appropriately frightening within the context of the story, and there are rarely needless "boo" moments. The rest of the film plays out as a compelling courtroom drama. Yes, courtroom dramas are overdone in film, but this was an exceptional case which deserves the attention of the film.

The thing that makes this film interesting is the courtroom drama aspect of it, and that it is very much a secular film on exorcisms, giving you both the perspective of the religious persons who believe Emily Rose's struggle to have been one with demons in a biblical sense, as well as that of the realists, who believe the demons might have been a creation of her own mind, but no less real in the toll they took on her.

Honestly, it's more courtroom than exorcism. Laura Linney is the type of actress that I see and think, "Why aren't you more heralded? She's great in everything I've seen her in." And then I look at her filmography and I see "Man of the Year." Oh, you worked with Robin Williams once? Yeah, you're tainted forever.

I really enjoyed this - not so much as virtue of being a horror film, though the scarier scenes were definitely well done compared to a lot of films I've seen in the genre, but the execution was actually really poignant. It was nice to see a horror film not be quite so mindless, in all honesty.

The only major problem with this movie is its rather inapproppriate relations to the actual case it's loosely based on. I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy this movie when I compare it to the long list of exorcism stories nowadays. Jennifer Captenter's performance as Emily was absolutely PHENOMINAL. The only downside to this film in my opinion was the segway into the courtcase. I wish it was primarily Emily's story. However, I did find some amount of enjoyment in it.

Would have been better with a little less court time and more demons on attack, for once the witness accounts was over, so was the excitement with dull closing court time killing the climax. Otherwise I found The Exorcism of Emily Rose (2005) a good horror-ish film, even if it had all the clichés possible. Tom Wilkinson sets the tone, while Jennifer Carpenter makes the faces.

Despite a somewhat unconvincing depiction of a female lawyer by Linney (who is usually excellent) TEoER is a terrifically engrossing drama with a fine balance of horror, courtroom drama and tension. I suppose it falls into cliche a little, in that you knew exactly what was going to happen as soon as someone says "I will testify tomorrow", but for the most part, TEoER was an intelligent, well made and more to the point, interesting analysis of the place of religion in modern society.

This was a much better film than I had expected. The acting was solid and thankfully it wasn't full of jump scares. I my opinion there are 3 distinct parts to this film, the trial, the possession, and everything else. That being said I found the trail scenes to be by far the best part and while I didn't fine the possession scenes scary I did feel that they enriched the courtroom scenes immensely. The other scene I found kind of hokey and as a result I couldn't give this a higher rating.
