Don’t worry ma’am our best detective is on it, we will find out who killed your child. *a geriatric George C Scott blusters in foaming at the mouth with rage*

Succeeds almost exclusively because it shouldn't be any good at all, but it is. Not great mind you, but good. This is where I make a NY Knicks joke thus tying in Patrick Ewing and mediocrity but that would be rude and frankly, beneath me. But he doesn't have any Championship rings. It's like the difference between Jason Miller and George C. Scott. That one win goes a long way.

It has its problems (the White Priest out of nowhere, the actual exorcism ending) but the rest is so amazing it's hard to hate. Blatty's dialogue is such a refreshing blend of deep theology and pop culture; Scott, Dourif, and Miller act circles around their peers, given the nature of the content. Interestingly, all dreams I've ever had with Fabio and Samuel L. Jackson are just as messed. I wonder why.

Low-key, talky, moody sequel. Dourif is pretty neat as a creepy psycho (is the guy ever cast as anything else?) and Scott really pours his soul into the role which kept me glued to the screen. The 2-second Fabio cameo was the amazing jumpscare everyone is talking about, right?

83? Yeah, I can't believe it either. But hey, any cast that features Fabio, Larry King, Samuel L. Jackson (for 2 seconds) and Patrick Ewing automatically gets a big thumbs up from me. Seriously though, I was completely shocked by how good this was compared with my expectations and it very well might feature the greatest "jump scare" that I've ever seen. The ending felt far too abrupt and some of the Scott/Douriff scenes felt too much like a stage performance, but this is a fine, dark thriller.

A 90 minute in-character conversation between George C. Scott and Brad Dourif would have been preferred, but I guess the animated gif bait is also fine.

Although some of Blatty's directorial choices seem very odd - & not always in ways designed to create an unsettling atmosphere (e.g. he slowly pulls the camera in for a "meh" carp joke), his story is good & perhaps with a more focused director (some connections are unclear) this could've been a big hit. It also doesn't help that I assume many viewers didn't realize the 2 leads are playing secondary characters from the first film (I didn't), but Scott & Dourif especially are electrifying.

Has some great individual scenes, but is undermined by Blatty's dogged insistence on telling things to the audience instead of showing them. This is why so few novelists become movie directors.

This by far is the best of the sequels and totally underrated. This follows on from the first film and thankfully forgets the fact that Exorcist II was ever made. Written by the original creator of The Exorcist this film starts up 15 years after the events of the first film. This is slighty creepy and mysterious and even a couple of jumpy moments. Some of the scenes do just have you thinking OMG did i really see that!!! Brad Dourif (the voice of Chucky was great in this.

This movie was ok but not as good as the first. George C. Scott plays a great role as a cop, and the guy playing the Gemini Killer was great, his discussions with Scott, especially when talking about the showmanship of his murders, were great scenes. The movie does have some flaws. It has several slow moments that aren't broken up by anything interesting. Also, the climax was a bit weird and while it ended ok, the lead up to the end was a bit lackluster, especially when compared to the original.

I have come up with a rhyme, just in case you make the same mistake as I did thinking the Exorcist II was supposed to be good one. "Exorcist Two? Expect some doo-doo. Exorcist Three? Yes, more for me!" I thought this film was going to slide into ridiculous territory when it showed a scene from heaven where Fabio plays an angel, and Patrick Ewing shows up. But, man oh man, then Brad Dourif shows up, and grounds this film back into creepy territory.

Almost NINTH CONFIGURATION lite, but the effort expended on dialogue, characters and imaginative scenes is undermined by narrative inexplicability (resulting from production problems), increasing silliness (congenital to this theme) and the decision to kill off the most entertaining relationship early on (between the grumpy old cop and the grumpy old priest). Score based on the theatrical version.

Borders on camp at several critical moments but I still love this fucking movie. Probably because of Brad Dourif doing his usual creepy-angry bit and George C. Scott bringing his angry grandpa rage.

a should-be tossed off threequel based on some mighty goofy lore, delivered through endless reels of exposition with rote visual direction (even disregarding the script, he's better with sound than image), and somehow it doesn't suck, rescued by all these weird, heavy-hearted performances and idiosyncratic, quotable, reference-heavy dialogues from possibly the oldest cast in the history of franchise movies. "it's a tasty fish, i've got nothing against it."

I wasn't expecting how fucking funny this movie was, when it wasn't being creepy. It's nowhere nearly as distressing as I would have liked, but it makes up for it by being damn entertaining. God, I love Brad Dourif.

Credit where it's due, this tries really hard to be something different to the iconic original while still tying itself to said original, & it does a better job of it than some of its contemporaries. Still, though, the flaws here are undeniable & while there are lots of positives to balance them out it's quite a bumpy ride. Some of the effects are chilling, others are silly. Some of the spooks hit hard, others fall flat. It's a solid followup, but never quite reaches that next level.

One of the most under appreciated and under rated horror movies ever. Exorcist III is burdened with living in the shadow of the original. But despite that, it's tightly directed and written (until the climax, which is admittedly lackluster), and is very effective in creating an atmosphere of foreboding evil. Just thinking about the infamous hospital scene gives me chills.

(Theatrical version) I thought this was pretty great. It is a tad on the slow side, but in the grand scheme of things, not too big of a deal seeing as I’d love to see it again. Has a lot of tell-placed jump scares and twists that’ll likely please the patient viewer, and it really gets scarier as it goes. The plot is weird and insane and I was totally in to it. Scott is excellent, and Dourif chews up every second of his screen time. Another Exorcist with a great story and effective scares!

It's amazing how a mostly dialogue-based horror movie can be so chilling. There's something a tad too abrupt about the ending, though, it could have been a lot more satisfying.

Not too shabby. They should have probably gone with the original title of the book ("Legion") instead of E3, since it doesn't compare favorably to The Exorcist and the connections to that milestone are pretty marginal and could easily have been rewritten to better suit the overall tone. However, apart from that and a few much too long monologues by Dourif, this is a solid supernatural thriller. Scott shines, even in minor stuff like this.

Pretty good. Picks up and develops a few threads from The Exorcist, and shares some of the same themes, but I wouldn't call it a direct sequel; it is, however, miles better than the bizarre Exorcist II. George C. Scott is his usual gruffly effective self, and Dourif and Miller are creepily watchable. It loses a bit of cohesion towards the end, but is generally atmospheric and entertaining throughout. One scene in the hospital nearly made me shart.

A few standout scenes - that jump scare, and there's a weird tonality to it that almost hits Lynchian territory at points. I'm not sure whether Fabio detracted from the weirdness or added to it. But a lot is very by the numbers, and the movie doesn't hold a candle to the original or amount to more than the sum of its parts.

George C. Scott and Brad Dourif both amaze me, stealing every scene they're in. The dialogue is actually pretty fantastic. The humor is clever and a great counterpoint to the creepiness, though it never quite terrifies like the first film.

More of a 80s style, low-key detective story than a “horror” film, but it’s still that rare sequel that attempts separation from its origins while still paying homage. Scott’s solid and authoritative presence helps, though he can’t make some of the more ridiculous moments in the final third convincing; a laboured effort to bring Miller back into proceedings doesn’t work at all (especially with Dourif already working overtime as the true creepy antagonist). Warts and all, a worthwhile effort.

The Exorcist 3 isn't horrible, just horribly boring. It's hard for me to believe I made it through. It's acting is bland when not terrible, and it's script feels like an afterthought to the title. There's some decent cinematography in here though so I guess it ain't all bad... I would still skip it though.

After watching this I heard Blatty was under pressure from the producers to re-do the last 1/3rd of the movie to tie it in with the original. This seems to make a lot of sense, since the first 2/3rd is tense and well made, and the rest seems sloppy, rushed and filled with holes.

The faux director's cut released recently is surprisingly inferior to the theatrical cut, which is somewhat underrated due to its association with a bad franchise and its bizarre tonal shifts that occasionally veer right into camp. Blatty's direction is a little dry, but his dialogue is engaging and the performances are generally solid, if a little strange--Dourif chews the scenery with morbid relish--and there is a superbly orchestrated jump scare in a hospital that is disturbingly good.

With its emphasis on pretentious theological patter, mannered perfs, and self-indulgent dark humor, this is closer in spirit to Blatty's cult fave _The Ninth Configuration_ than it is to the original _Exorcist_. While Blatty's jejune Jesuit vaudeville approach -- exemplified by a nutsy nightmare sequence featuring hoop star Patrick Ewing as the Angel of Death(!) -- fails more often than not, he does exhibit a flair for creative casting.

Original theatrical version. Somewhat of a return to form as a horror film grounded in drama, though not one as stylish or atmospheric as Friedkin's. This will undoubtedly appeal more to fans of the original than the first sequel, Exorcist II: The Heretic. It's clear, however, that this is directed by Blatty the author, as it's very dialogue heavy, to the point where the scares almost seem out of place.

Plotwise this is fairly generic crime procedural + supernatural horror stuff, not much different than anything I saw in any one of a hundred Supernatural episodes. Tenuous connection to the greater Exorcist lore. But oddly George C Scott and Brad Dourif both manage to navigate around the material enough to deliver phenomenal, can’t-look-away performances that singlehandedly boosted my score.

Wow, a solid horror sequel. After the 2nd movie, often considered one of the worst horror sequels of all time, this third movie was incredibly welcome, as it was once again written by the same guy the wrote both novels and the screenplay of the first, and not only that, but he directed this, as well...and it's a mystery/whodunit case that gets better as the film progresses. Great visuals, cinematography, dialogue, and performances...will watch again.

I can't enthusiastically agree with either the camp that outright dismisses this one, nor those who are quite opposite to them. There are problems throughout, not just with the last act [which is of course complete nonsense], particularly Dourif's tedious monologues. However, there is really, really great stuff here, and I so hope the other cuts, putatively with much less blatant studio tampering, make for a really solid movie.
