Based on the 1971 novel by William Peter Blatty, The Exorcist marries three different scenarios into one extraordinary plot. A visiting actress in Washington, D.C., notices dramatic and dangerous changes in the behavior and physical make-up of her 12-year-old daughter. Meanwhile, a young priest at nearby Georgetown University begins to doubt his faith while dealing with his mother's terminal sickness. And, book-ending the story, a frail, elderly priest recognizes the necessity for a show-down with an old demonic enemy. (imdb)

Probably feel like a smug asshole whenever you watch this version again.

Apart from being a horror movie (didn't have much effect on me once again), this is a very good film. It's like the director was laying bricks, you could feel that sense of buildup during the film, with each scene being better than the previous one. The lack of awards for this film is probably due to it's unfriendly academy attitude (profanity and religion wasn't well received I guess), but when you look at this film today, you realize they don't make em like they used to, a shame once again.

Oh, I've seen it. I remember the spider walk more from behind the scenes footage than the footage that made it into the movie itself. The included scene was much more effective than I had thought. Like the Apocalypse Now Redux version, I don't find it superior but will be willing to trade it in every other time they warrant a rewatch because there's enough interesting things going on. Far better than the Director's Cut of Alien which showed too much too often.

Let's begin with two complaints regrettably forcing me to shave off 5 points: a few (literally) headturning special effects and, critically, the voice dubbing of Blair. Had she screamed her heart out herself, it would have made all the difference for me, scare-wise. Though I like that most of the characters are highly sceptical initally, maybe an appeal to realism is a mute point. Now on to my official, nitpick-free review: "Near-perfect masterpiece, a product of quality work from all involved."

I prefer this to the original.

The original gets a 100 from me, the rerelease with added footage knocks it down a tad, cause that extra stuff was unnecessary and at some points, just bizarre.

A new and improved version of the cult classic.

Although it's one of the more famous scenes, I'm not sure the spider-walk sequence works. Still gave it the same score as the original though.

Adds in multiple small scenes that make the movie scarier and more complete all around.

The additional scenes do nothing but hamper the pacing while spelling out self-evident information, but they are not so egregiously bad as to damage the impact of the film; Karras and Merrin's brief staircase exchange is a nice breather and reinforcement of the physical toll of the ceremony. Otherwise, this is still an outstanding horror film (with the medical stuff more frightening than the demon!) with top-flight performances bringing credibility to the material, especially Burstyn and Miller.

In horror less is always more, especially superimposed faces designed purely for jump scares. It messes up the pacing and looks lame. They did this version just to reinsert the spiderwalk but the extra stuff detracts from the original.

Some new interesting scenes don't really detract or add all that much to the overall effect of the film.

The greatest horror film ever made. It doesn't scare me or anything, but it is really well made and is one of my favorite movies.

New (previously cutted off) effects flat story down to the mediocrecy horror movie. Pict on a wall (was it demon or what) looks funny. The original rules!!! This mostly sucks!

The spiderwalk scene is probably the creepiest scene in the movie, but that's not saying a whole lot.

Although its a long time since I saw the original version, I don't think the changes here make any really significant difference to the movie. Hence the same score, and nothing to add beyond what was contained in my review for that version (and I continue to like what I wrote in that review).

Eleven minutes of inconsequential extra footage and a few CGI cartoons, neither of which I will miss the next time I watch my creaky old VHS tape of the 1973 version. It's still _The Exorcist_

"Call it the Andy Warhol-effect, but I find that when films are parodied too much, they lose a part of their strength. That is why the first half hour of The Exorcist, albeit a skillful build-up, made me hope I watched something else. But after that, it becomes clear that this is the Real Deal. Devoid of the sensationalism or uninspired renderings of all its imitators, this is a scary and suspenseful film. One can only wonder what it was like to watch this back in 1973."

Thank God there's a version without the goofy as shit scene that depletes the tension of containing evil. Imagine plopping the pancakes scene from Cabin Fever in. Goofy shit.

It's a step down from the original version but it doesn't ruin it or anything, it's mostly just unnecessary and a little misguided when you nailed it on the first go round

Deserves its reputation as one of the scariest films ever made, but this description belies its tension, and the skill with which it was filmed. It's not just cheap shocks and thrills - there's plenty of meat here to go with the scary stuff. (As far as this vs. the original, I would have left the spiderwalk in, maybe, but the other changes were for the better.)
