Overpraised horror movie produced by a major studio, which meant a larger budget and more publicity than other horror movies released until that point. Concerns the great fear of American parents that when their daughters reach adolescence, they will become obscene bitches. The horror for 1973 audiences derived in large measure from the unsettling feeling provoked by breaking the taboo in movies against hearing children utter profanities. The main problem is that it is rather tedious and silly.

I first saw this movie at a way too young age, it did nothing for me, just mostly talking and then some pea soup headspinning spookies. As I get older and revisit it I just get filled with dread. No not the head spinning pea soup spookies but the horrible medical procedures ... the helplessness of watching a parent age and so on but nothing compares to how long I thought Max Von Sydow was pushing 80 years old in 1973 and than decided to live another 50+ years.

This movie perplexed me ; Watching as a child it freaked me out But as a adult watching it's really not that scary unless your perhaps deeply religious If you ask me the only thing scary was the machines used to test the girl Yes I understand at the time no one had seen anything like it But I can't imagine grown adults running and screaming from the theater

1973? This must have been some fairly scary crap! Horror film wise: Blair is scary, it takes it's time to make thing scarier I feel, and some of the scariest effects and imagery I have ever seen in any scary movie. Movie wise: Good directing and writing along with great performances and make-up, and great cinematography. Probably really is the scariest movie I have viewed personally, and definitely in my top 5 horror movies. True terror and horror at it's greatest.

Friedkin's aggressive directorial style really works for this hard-hitting and philosophical horror film. Despite the subject matter, it is a rather cerebral account that not only has a fight for a girl's soul, but a man's faith.

A film that has a lot of personal meaning for me. Growing up - and even still today - it rates as the most terrifying film I've ever seen. Perhaps due to my experiences with this film as a child, I cannot - even as a grown man - sleep soundly after watching this. Well written, brilliantly directed and beautifully acted. The long, climactic exorcism scene with no cuts and no background music still stands as one of the most pervertedly beautiful scenes ever filmed.

As a lover of the horror genre, I'm embarrassed that it's taken me so long to finally see this one. While still packing quite a whallop (I can't imagine how audiences took to the profane, bile-spewing, crucifix masturbating 12-year-old in 1973), endless parodies and knockoffs have diluted some of its power. Notwithstanding, this is absolutely one of the genre's best...Friedkin's direction and commitment to the profane and sacrilegious is absolutely fearless. Rarely do movies feel this dangerous.

I want to like it, I really do, but I'll have to go against the consensus here and say that in my eyes it hasn't aged very well. The tense, slow build-up in the beginning is great, as are the subtle yet chilling first stages of the possession, but once the cheesy satanic voice and face rotting kick in, the film loses it's hold of me. It's too over the top and all over the place to get under my skin.

Meh. A great deal of my ambivalence is because I found both grounded drama plots (the religious figure having a crisis of faith, and a mother doubting her daughter) to be far more compelling than the genre supernatural horror. The premise lacked any gut-punch scares or spooks, and there were too many unintentionally hilarious scenes for my modern day sensibilities. I get the Rosemary's Baby influences, but Polanksi's film was better. Marginal recommendation for the mood & performances.

From the haunting opening scenes of Father Merrin uncovering the demon to the final reflective moment of Father Dyer, it's all very gripping with tension throughout, not just during the exorcism (less than 20 minutes of the whole film) but in all the build-up as well. Some of it does come off as a bit cheesy now... the make-up in particular is overdone. But still one of the best horror movies around.

Let's begin with two complaints regrettably forcing me to shave off 5 points: a few (literally) headturning special effects and, critically, the voice dubbing of Blair. Had she screamed her heart out herself, it would have made all the difference for me, scare-wise. Though I like that most of the characters are highly sceptical initally, maybe an appeal to realism is a mute point. Now on to my official, nitpick-free review: "Near-perfect masterpiece, a product of quality work from all involved."

Lost in all the hullabaloo about how the production was cursed and how it's the scariest film of all-time is what a methodical, patient, mature adult drama it is, grappling with the more mundane terror of knowing something is terribly wrong with your child and feeling powerless to do anything about it. religious parable in which moral scourge is a constant threat, one that can infect the soul with obscenity and bestiality if guard is lowered. its physical manifestations cannot be cured by the twin medical temples of pharmacy and psychiatry, as this is not an evil of the material world, but the spiritual one. instead, only ritualistic praying and beating can cleanse the soul of one's sins. personally, i think "keep your fingers away from my goddamned cunt" is a good phrase for girls to learn.

A movie that disturbed the hell out of me. I'm not even a religious man but the psychological horror of this movie hit me hard. That said, i did find it a bit overrated and hard to believe that it is the quintessential horror movie, as the first hour is dreadfully boring and the production value is alright at best and not standing the test of time. That being said, bravo to the horror aspects, the cast, and the make-up department.

At this film's core, the film plays on a few different fears, but it all seems to come back to an ancient terror that continues to exist no matter how much society has "progressed". Modern science could not help Regan, and the Catholic church can only help because even though it has given up the practice of exorcisms, they find two priests who can perform it. This film is symptomatic of our vague unease that our progression is mostly illusionary.

In honor of having just finished the novel I'm reviewing the movie and reducing (ha) my rating to 95 because I forgot the ending is not completely to my taste. Still, what an excellent movie. This sets the bar for horror films, with great cinematography, compelling characters (esp. Father Karras) and of course being freakishly scary. And I love the slow build-up. Btw, I'm happy to say it's a good adaptation of the novel (which is excellent, though not scary after 5-6 movie viewings).

Perhaps watching The Exorcist at 30, after having seen various scenes parodied over the years, diminished the effect the film had on me. The film has a slow build; the suggestion of an exorcism isn't broached till an hour in, but overall it is well paced. Many scenes are purposefully distasteful, but no longer that offensive. The puppetry and effects look dated more than scary; a similar situation with the acting. The intro in Iraq is perhaps the most gripping part.

The Exorcist makes me wish I had lived at that time, because I'm sure as hell it was seriously frightening back in the 70s. The acting is very memorable, particularly from Ellen Burstyn, the mother, Jason Miller, father Damien, and, of course, Linda Blair, who plays the unfortunate Regan MacNeil. This was a good movie. The story was good, the characters were interesting, and the acting was good. The movie almost got slow at times, but right when it started to feel slow, it would throw in something to keep you interested. The possession was really creepy and kind of shocking at times (the girl and the cross scene was especially freaky, and the climax was great), but in a good way. This movie may have been made in the early 70s, but it definately holds up today as a creepy, well done movie

It wasn't scary and there wasn't much else going on to be honest. I felt that the exorcism wasn't the main focus of the film, it was more like a cautionary tale about man abandoning god. Relying on modern medicine instead of faith for example is an excellent way to let Satan get to you.

The year has little effect on this fundamental fight between good and evil. For one it is a very slow movie and it takes its time to build up but then pretty much all the pieces fall into their place. After all it is more about the story than special effects and even those do seem to have aged well. My only wish was that certain angles were pursued more and all characters were as complete as Jason's Miller's was.

Ugh. The cinematography and general look of the movie is quite good, but the well-mounted tension builds into laughter more often than not. This would be fine if laughter was the result every time, but more often than not it results in sheer boredom. The voice of Pazuzu was just too ridiculous for me as well, and took me out of the movie more than anything. Oh, and "it was scary in 1973" is not an excuse. It was a shock gimmick then, too.

The pacing suffers from the slow way older movies worked when we weren't all over-saturated with stimulus. The scares also date with the emphasis on shock value that reduces as the years go by. Saying that,to see it at the time would have been a blast. Actings great where the characters really fit into the world instead of being actors just saying a set number of lines. The house set is great, placing the horrific action in the living space decades before PA. Of course the makeups great. End.

40 years on, it's difficult for The Exorcist to resonate with contemporary audiences now like it did in the early 70s when the church was fading but the vestige of belief remained. Its horrifying effect has also been marred by pointless sequels, endless parodies and the suspicion that Friedkin is trying too hard to shock by honing in on the more sensationalistic aspects of Blatty's best selling novel. But it is a well made character driven horror with a great atmosphere and an explosive finale.

This would've greatly benefited from just a single establishing shot of the staircase (maybe I missed it). It's so well made but the makeup and green bile were terrible choices. Regan might've actually been scary if she'd looked her normal self, and most every time she spoke was unintentionally funny. The two scenes with the Pazuzu statue were the highlights. The pacing is slow, the beginning particularly, and the picture is not so scary or creepy (although the medical scenes were creepy) as it is gross & disgusting. Some of the scenes were difficult to follow, & some were of only the mildest interest. The possession is an amazingly nasty piece of work, even shocking.
