West ups Sly--the action is more impactful and polished--and there is at least some attempt to inject real humour into the proceedings, no matter how dire, but the same problems remain (i.e too many characters, a lack of imagination and plot as well as a sense of play) so it's impossible to avoid the feeling that it's another missed opportunity. JCVD is a welcome addition though, confirming that, along with Day of Reckoning, and to a lesser extent Enemies Closer, he is good at playing villains.

A littler better than the first movie, but it may not say that much. Simon West has directed a stable action movie where Van Damme belongs to the good things with The Expendables 2 .

A big win - unlike the first one. Sure it's unoriginal, predictably following the stylings of the genre one after the other, yet originality is not why we're here - it wouldn't hurt, but it's far from a dealbreaker, especially with everything else that's on offer, namely almost non-stop, thrilling action (directed and choreographed well this time), good humour (references, dad jokes, kitsch one-liners, I'm all in), kick-ass cameos, a delicious JCVD and, finally, chemistry between the characters.

So much free-range testosterone I grew a third testicle during the runtime. Does everything the first film should have done to begin with: throw us in the shit with no pretext, play like a combination WWII B-movie / XXX roughie / Chinese co-production, and end with Arnie, Sly, Bruce, and Chuck mowing through a Russian airport like a US Armed Forces recruitment video. JCVD hams it as Satan, Norris is the God from the Machine, and the dialogue is run through a rock tumbler. It’s beautiful.

Expendables 2 does make a few significant improvements. In a overall perspective, it’s a pretty average revenge flick. The two things that stood out for me were Van Damme’s villain, and some of the humor hitting more consistently than the first. I don’t think this is a good movie by any means, the acting is still so meh considering the talent, but the film is better. The fans of the first will probably love this, but these films aren’t made for someone like myself, and that’s fine.
