A terrible film that completely misses the point of what's creepy about the experiment, namely that anyone, when put in a position of power could become sadistic, and anyone in a position of weakness could be compliant, by putting characters with already sadistic tendencies in the role of guards and the already elderly or weak in the roles of the prisoners.

It's more prison thriller than anything else, but has enough of a psychological wavelength to appeal to thoughtful moviegoers. Its sociological point may be clear as a bell well before it makes it, but it's still an important one. Whitaker goes a little over the top, but it's still fun to watch the dichotomy between who he is outside the experiment and inside.

Bearing in mind that this has strong roots in a real experiment conducted by Stanford, I highly doubt that any screened experiment like this would turn out with people turning into raving lunatics because of damned role playing game, but they did...

A slightly more polished version of the German attempt. I seem to remember better things about the other version but who knows.

Brody and Whitaker try to pull it off but the script and direction just aren't good enough.

It has more bad moments than good. I like the idea, but its just not a good sign when a movie starring Oscar winners like Adrien Brody and Forest Whitaker goes straight to DVD.

Brody and Whitaker are great to watch, and the movie is often engrossing thanks to them... It also doesn't do as much with its premise as it should. Or it probably does too much, it depends on how cynical one is.

The experiment will make you react strongly to the injustice, and thus you feel for the good guys and hate the bad guys. So far so good... BUT the experiment (in the movie) is working a bit too "well", which unfortunately makes it lose most of its credibility. Whitaker is doing a good job, Brody only an okay job. But the latter is probably director Scheuring's fault.

Bounces between being frequently uncomfortable and fairly good, but, wow, its a stretch to believe that 26 mostly sane men would really just unravel like that in 5 days....

Linguistic EXPERIMENT: How much does the German term "DAS" differ from its English counterpart,"THE"? (Qualitatively, a lot.)

Being trained in social psychology, this had all the trappings of a movie I'd enjoy. But alas, this Hollywoodized take on the Stanford prison "experiment" devolved rapidly into an unsatisfying brutality fest.

Decent. I only really watched it because it was 2am and I didn't want to sit through Munich. Killed some time, even if it isn't the greatest film.

A movie that shows us the Stanford Prison Experiment, but sped up and in modern times. Why not? It is basically a true story too.

teaches us in the nearly end of the movie the value of freedom, and any movie (another eg: being The Pursuit of Happyness) that teaches something, or just reminds us of some values like this, i will give 99

Everything that was good in the original was ruined beyond repair in the first 30 minutes. It was all downhill from there.

Well, as far as I know this version seems to be even more extreme (and with a different outcome), however, it always seems to be difficult to beat the original (2001 movie). Well done by Adrien Brody.

Forest Whitaker is one hell of a brilliant actor, and he proves that here again. He plays the leader of the experimental guards and he does such a good job his scenes are unnerving at times. Brody is great in his role, but the one thing that slowed this film down was how little time this experiment took to become a full blown prison riot movie. Perhaps a slow transition into about day 10 where you begin to have some friction with the rules and a bit of an ego trip. Too quick of a transition.

The movie is more violent than the German version of the film and Adrien Brody & Forest Whitaker give good performances but the screenplay sucks and fails to so what the researchers were doing, why the people acted the way they did and how so many of the people with mental and sociological issues were part of the experiment.

Poor structure and poor directing... it quickly descends to the level of a snuff film and only partially recovers. Some decent actors are flailing away, but I find Adrien Brody unwatchable under almost any circumstances... just me.

An unbelievable construct, but inside the construct a really solid film, felt kind of like Braveheart in a jail cell.

The lesson to be learned from the actual experiment is entirely lost as this movie quickly devolves into one absurd act of physical brutality after another. Typical Hollywood exaggeration and hyperbole until all subtlety and any message is lost. The talented Whitaker and Brody could not save this inept adaption of the actual Stanford experiment.
