Celebration of man's transcendent harness of science and technology, and lament for those who would corrupt. This film's engraved illustration aesthetic and wild effects are an absolute treat. The blend of live action with cut outs, puppetry, and stop motion is a clear precursor to Gilliam. Unfortunate that the characterizations and narrative are less fulfilling, which means this might be better if it were a purely abstract audiovisual experience, or even just a silent film.

This is one of those movies that if you could live in, you would. The underwater scenes are unreal. Lots of fun.

An incredible creative mix of live-action and animation brings the 19th century scifi books of Verne alive. But the plot some problems and pacing issues.

But it relies too much on its charm.

Likeable tale of technological adventure: the animation of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century line engravings adds considerably to the charm, with some moments of visual wit that rather exceed that of the dialogue.

Zeman's best films are lovingly hand crafted collages of live action and animation that are borderline avantgarde. There is no pretense of reality to these worlds: they are entirely artificial constructions that revel in their glorious artifice. Consequently, much joy is to be had watching the actors interact in these imaginative 2D environments. The flights of fancy consisting of remarkable set pieces frequently overpower the narrative, but Zeman's visual storytelling is generally on point.

The mix of animation and live action is amazing and more than enough reason to watch the film. The Jules Verne setting is pretty cool too, but the actual story and characters are not all that interesting.
