The Face of Fu Manchu

The Face of Fu Manchu

1965
Drama, Crime

Back in England it is increasingly apparent that Fu Manchu is still operating. Smith is quick to detect that the execution he witnessed was that of a double, an actor hypnotised into taking Fu Manchu's place. The villain is back in London, working from a secret base underneath the River Thames. He has kidnapped the esteemed Professor Muller, who holds the key to a potentially deadly solution from the seeds of a rare Tibetan flower. (wikipedia)

Presumably resurrected to cash-in on James Bond this has a great opening scene, but nothing lives up to it. It also has a seemingly decent budget & plenty of fight scenes, but they're too dated to impress. 1965 Bond is dated too, but his fight scenes feel more intense. This film also highlights what made Bond so successful: youth & sex. The hero in the Manchu books was a Holmes knock-off & they make him more of a man of action here, but he's still way more stuffy professor than "cool" sex symbol

Ming the Merciless. The Mandarin. Fu Manchu. I was excited to watch this. The opening raised my expectations. Disappointing to find Fu Manchu mostly hanging out in the sewers despite being the most dangerous man in the world. His henchmen were defeated by a middle aged (if I'm generous) white guy dishing out slaps. I guess the idea of an Oriental lurking around with a shadow network can be scary. Terrorist attack on Tibetian civilians at the end. Fav scene: car chase.

Has there ever been a villain who was slighted of screen time worse than Fu Manchu? Javier Bardem's turn in "Skyfall" comes to mind, as does Angelina Jolie in "Gone in Sixty Seconds." Before you try to convince me she wasn't a villain in that movie, take a look at her in it. If she isn't trying to thwart the good guys, than she's certainly trying to thwart the producers, or good taste.

i was so excited when i sat down to watch this, but my excitement was dampened by the fact that it's intolerably boring. the plot could have been good b-movie fare but somehow all the thrills are coolly directed out of it. somebody forced christopher lee to down a bunch of valium for his scenes, his fu manchu when we get to see him is a dull, monotone uncharismatic villain.

One of the bad Christopher Lee films, lacking imagination and pretty much everything else.

This stuff is kind of hard to sell to a modern audience, but it's pretty much 1930's/40's pulp juiced up with a slight 60's edge.
