As weak as I expected it to be. The script is so bad. The plot focuses on the least interesting story elements possible and the tone is all over the place. Luc, for your information, the mix of ugly violence and lightheartedness doesn't equal edgy black comedy. All this being said, RdN og TLJ are solid. They elevate the movie. To semi-watchable crap.

Besson's got a couple undeniably awesome movies floating around, but more often than not, he has a habit of leaning too far to the side of generic, cookie cutter action movies of one variety or another with a range of kitschy charm injected in. This one does have a little grain of charm, but such a little amount that it couldn't possibly make up for the uninspired and unoriginal story. File this one away in the same place that the world collectively forgot about "The Whole Nine Yards."

There's something really sad about watching today's Robert DeNiro watch Goodfellas. I can vividly remember most of Goodfellas and I just finished this movie and the only thing I remember from it is Goodfellas.

In which Robert De Niro's character watches and leads a discussion on Goodfellas. Yet it's the part involving the school newspaper, in its sheer unbelievability, that the film not only jumps the shark, but does a few pirouettes as well. To Besson's credit, he does bring a decent amount of fun, as is his wont.

I'm not really sure what to make of this, other than it really wasn't what I was expecting! It was undoubtedly more violent and darker than expected (normally a good thing), but Besson's uneasy mish-mash of fluffy family comedy and violent mob thriller fails on most every level. Throw in some odd musical choices, an overlong runtime, cavernous plot holes and dire screenplay and yeah... I guess this was pretty shit.

This is what one would call auteur-torture! Watching a filmmaker at his lowest, and erasing all the wonderful memories of the films he has made in the past. Kind of like watching Coppola's post Apocalypse Now films, like Jack...

The first half of the film is random violence set to out of place music. The second half tries to build tension but fails to realize that the only thing it built up before was me not giving a shit, and thus I didn't. The film made reference to Goodfellas, it was a mistake to bring up such a significantly better film.

An element of twisted humor is present, from displaying the differences between American culture and European culture and having Deniro's aging gangster character enjoy a screening of Goodfella's, Besson makes good use his actors. The story is very limited to making this film a bit slow at times, but much of it is saved from the powerful acting from everyone involved including Dianna Agron and John D'leo. They prove to be the highlight of the film when it almost become a boring mess.

The story was really brought to life by Robert De Niro, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Tommy Lee Jones. Diana Agron was a special treat. Also John D'Leo and the entire cast of goodfellas were good. The whole family of hopeless criminals wreck havoc on a small French town. The killing at the end was a little over the top, but somewhat expected for a story about a gangster stool pigeon and his family. It was quite exaggerated, but fun and worthwhile.

Made me laugh and I love watching a psycho family. But the weird twists in the movie are making no sense. The movie doesn't know what to focus on (a love-story, teen-story, gangster-story, ...). So non of the elements in it really pop out. But still I like the acting in it.

I like that a French director would make a movie ribbing the French about what assholes they are to Americans. And that De Niro decided he could go another round as a gangster, let alone share the screen with Tommy Lee Jones. It's a fun, slight and cheesy cakewalk that's just what you think it's gonna be and is full of nods to the genre.

In this movie you get to see Robert De Niro watch himself in Goodfellas. It's not terrible but it's far from good. I was actually impressed at how much I enjoyed De Niro in this considering he's been hit or miss this past decade. The action is lackluster, the script is lackluster, the family is lackluster....well you get the idea. It's not action packed enough, gritty enough or comedic enough to really be redeeming at all. Also the story of the girl needing the guy to get away, I mean really?

The pacing feels strange, and the shifts in tone feel unnatural, but what really does it is that the irony is so thick that it separates the viewer from the movie. It isn't just that Deniro plays a mobster, or that Michelle Pfeiffer again plays a mobster's wife, but there are whole chapters of this film where we are meant fully to be aware of Deniro's filmography and not at all expected to lose ourselves in the world of the film's construction. Must pass.

I liked it. It was thoroughly enjoyable, but not overly memorable. Good performances all around, with some funny moments (like the reoccurring Fuck gag), but it wasn't hilarious by any means. Solid on all fronts, and I especially liked the song in the final part. I also enjoyed Tommy Lee Jones whenever he talked to De Niro, it was like two grisly vets talking to one another both in the movie and in real life.

It's just a movie to watch for fun. It is certainly over-the-top in a lot of places but that's what makes it comic. All 4 characters of the family have a really meaty role to play in the movie and there are plenty of hilarious scenes and one-liners throughout the movie.

The fact that the only good sequence here is the movie debate after a screening of Goodfellas, in which De Niro's character talks about his mafia life to a crowd at the Normandy Film Society, just makes this an utterly forgettable, if not just bland, gangster comedy. One or two gags seem funny -- you know, every character here is a gangster, and they like one in boy, girl and wife everyday situations --, but if you're looking for a truly good mafia comedy, go for Jane Austen's Mafia!.

Besson's pokiest, most oddly pointless movie to date. Also, there's some really weird shit happening here that most folks aren't talking about, and that I can't get into without some major spoilers. So, yeah. See it, or don't. It gets good about the time De Niro goes to watch a movie, and the movie is GOODFELLAS. But that's after about 90 minutes.

I enjoyed what I saw from "The Family", a pretty decent criminal action-comedy with good enough performances. Kind of nice to see de Niro almost parody himself, I got a great kick out of virtually all of his scenes, ESPECIALLY his quiet, introspective moments. It's a family of intelligent badasses, and while I personally maybe could have done without the melodramatic subplot with the daughter and the student-teacher, it's not nearly enough to tank the flick. It's teenagers, it happens. See it!

Its a great film, but lets not get carried away. Its screenplay/plot severely limits just how great it can be. The acting, directing, and cinematography were all there, but the screenplay, while not bad, simply plays it too safe. The premise could have been explored more making better use of Tommy Lee Jone's character (as well as the other FBI agents).

Is The Family worth seeing? If you're old enough to understand exactly where the film fits in the De Niro Gangster Movie Canon (which is now officially a thing), then I think so, if only to see the actor play the older, less serious version of a character he's played countless times before. The excessive violence is as fun as it can be, there are some really funny moments and lines, and after it gets past its slow start, there aren't many moments where you'll be tempted to check the watch.
