Though it has the trappings of an entertaining B-movie, Mizoguchi's direction style proves completely unfit for the material, with his lengthy takes and static camera bringing an inescapable lethargy to the proceedings, especially during the brief and lifeless action scenes. As such, the film successfully conveys the painstaking nature of forging an unbeatable weapon but offers the viewer absolutely no reward for their patience.

I kind of got into it with it's simple settings and easy storytelling. I mean, it's a pretty bare bones production with a propaganda feel to it, boosting up the message toward the end quite heavily, but if you look at it as a minor Kenji Mizoguchi output, it has it's little charms.
