Excellent Wilde adaptation, with Sanders and Carroll having a ball in their deliciously acrid characters, plus a sterling supporting cast backing them up. Occasional staginess and dry patches more than compensated for by Preminger's always interesting and roving camera eye.

Otto Preminger handling a modified version of Lady Windermere's Fan, telling the story in extended flashbacks from the mothers point of view. And it's elegantly done. There is a sense that they play it out as it the audience already know the entire story, and that's possibly the case as Oscar Wilde's play had been a hot commodity for half-a-century. And in that sense The Fan (1949) doesn't go for the high emotional reveals, instead finds other ways the make the story enjoyable to watch.

It's always enjoyable when a successfully interwoven plot is supported by great acting performances.
