Hazel and Gus are two teenagers who share an acerbic wit, a disdain for the conventional, and a love that sweeps them on a journey. Their relationship is all the more miraculous given that Hazel's other constant companion is an oxygen tank, Gus jokes about his prosthetic leg, and they met and fell in love at a cancer support group. I liked this to be honest. Sure The Fault in Our Stars may be a somewhat cliched in spots, but the movie is pretty well written. The acting in here is great, especially Woodley. Not for everybody, but it's a well made movie. Entertaining for it's characters/acting and honest story about young love. Emotionally investing and heartbreaking.

Despite condemning cigarettes while giving its leading man bad-boy appeal by keeping one in his mouth, the writing mostly avoids shallow manipulation & digs for truths when not reaching for profundity. Along w/ the outstanding performances, it results in much more than a Lifetime tearjerker. The film's takeway never feels as simplistic as "Seize the day"; there's plenty of hurt. It also tackles the value of being loved deeply rather than widely that the Facebook generation will likely ignore.

I can't be objective, won't be objective. I'm just gonna give 100 cause this film deserves it for the feelings that it manages to pass into you. It's basically "The Love Story" for our generation. I'm sure it has flaws, but I couldn't see them because my vision was kinda blurry from all the tears. I cherished the movie, my life, how lucky I am to be alive and healthy and have people in my life who loves me. At the end of the day, that's more important to me than its artistic, cinematic values.

You have to acknowledge whenever a film manages to bring out emotions in so many people. Regardless of whether you would call it emotional torture porn or whatever. So many have tried, and so many have failed in this discipline. Josh Boone and co. succeeds in a way that you for two hours forget about what basically is a straight forward, flawed story told a million times before - you just give in, even though you try to hold it back. And a good cry, my friends, is always cleansing...

A touching romance and tragedy, but the movie simplifies everything to face value. Instead of fear, and pathos, and confronting the harsh truth of mortality, we get a mishmash of humor and cuteness and tearjerking for the duration of the film. By no means bad, especially with the excellent casting choices. However, a stunning story about flawed people discussing philosophy, hiding behind pretension, and silently screaming into the abyss can be found in the book.

Shailene Woodley is wonderful in this tragic story that follows a teenager struggling with cancer and falling in love. Ansel Elgort also gives a good performance. Full of witty humor, interesting situations and some engaging family drama. The characters are complex and feel authentic. A clever well told story with characters that are easy to become invested in, despite the tragic losses.

Hell yeah, I felt manipulated. That's kind of the point! I also felt devastated, emotionally drained, yet elated that I'd just witnessed yet another outstanding performance from Shailene Woodley, who is rapidly becoming one of my favourite actresses. It's a well-drawn story with a cast of convincing characters, and for the occasional moment that feels a little contrived there are a dozen more that hit home completely on-the-mark. One of the best teen romance movies of the past decade.

The Fault in Our Stars is a good movie. If you're in the mood for teen melodrama that does a few things different from the typical mold that is used for these types of movies, then this is one worth checking out. It works primarily because of its lead characters; they're interesting, well-written, performed by good actors, and are more aware of their own mortality than most other movie teenagers. It's unlikely that the emotional moments won't get to you by the time it ends.

Manipulative though it may be, with one scene in Amsterdam that's a little too on-the-nose and saccharine, it's an overall very thoughtful adaptation and an effective tearjerker about the transient nature of our most cherished relationships in the face of the inevitable and how, perversely, this doesn't make them any less valuable. Woodley grounds the sentimentality but it's really Dafoe who brings the theme to light. Definitely Weber et al.'s best and most honest work to date. M83!? Fuck yeah.

This is a film that sticks with you for a couple of days after watching it. The story is really powerful and compelling and takes you on a ride of emotion. The acting is first class and you really care about the relationship of the main couple. Ansel Elgort is excellent and has a very interesting character arc throughout the film. There are alot of sad moments in the final 45 minutes so definitely stock up on tissues before watching.

a verdict pretty much based on pure feeling. leaving the cinema drenched in tears should always be a compliment to the story just witnessed, even if the visuals, plot, and a soundtrack bordering on contriving could be mistaken for 'movie of the week' material. Heartwrenching.

I've cried my eyes out. It is not something new but it's honest and cute. Oh and sad, extremely sad. Although it's close to reality I feel it's very optimistic and the mother of Hazel Grace is absolutely unrealistic yet amazing. At the end it is still a beautiful love story with the right attitude towards life and love.

Good film, well written and compelling. Some things felt forced or contrived but there's a lot of genuine emotion to be experienced here too. It raises many existential questions and makes you think and feel. The casting is rather good, as is the acting and soundtrack. It features some really beautiful and deep scenes that are so true to life. But then as I said earlier there are some contrived moments too. Some fairly subtle successful humour here as well. A film worth experiencing for sure!

Seriously one of the best romance films I have seen in my whole life. The characters were wonderful, the people you wish you were, with a love you wish you had. I hope every day I can make my wife feel as beautiful and loved as Gus did for Hazel. The themes of love being worth the very real pain of mortality, that being special to one can be more than special to many, they were deep and beautifully shown. Excellent.

It certainly has its flaws, but overall this movie is so well done that it would almost feel inappropriate to list these flaws here. A fairly simple story told in a beautiful way, this movie has its emotional ups and downs, and it even packs a mean punch every now and then. The tone is consistent and works great, and the characters (albeit not all of them equally likeable) are realistic and interesting. The acting is terrific and the directing is serviceable in the best possible way.

The story is good and sad at parts, but very much like real life in that sense. Fortunately the story is not maudlin. It (like its main characters) do not seek pity. The best part of this film though is Shailene Woodley. She is amazingly talented.

I didn't love John Green's book, but this film succeeds in turning the weaker parts of the novel into something entertaining. I thought the dialogue in the book was horrible but, by some miracle, Shailene Woodley makes it sound almost natural. She and Laura Dern are definitely the highlights of the movie. Also the chemistry between the two young leads is wonderful.

The acting's good, the story's cute, and the movie does achieve a certain empathy for the protagonists. Still, it's so over-simplified that I always thought somebody's pulling my leg. I guess that's the way to approach the story when you're having death-sentenced teenagers as leads, but to me the movie was too optimistic and romantic. It's cute, but it doesn't leave an impact it could have considering the illness and fatality the main actors actually endure. The "feel-good" movie of 2014.

What exactly makes The Fault in Our Stars special remains to be seen. Elgort and Woodley are good, but not transcendent. Boone is fresh, but never extraordinary. The script has moments, but lacks consistency. But like most adaptations, it feels like the CliffsNotes of a greater story, something so much deeper and meaningful that fails to translate to the big screen.

This was a great movie. It had great acting, directing, and clever screenplay. I actually thought Shailene Woodley wasn't very bad i this, nor Ansel Elgort was good too. Josh Boone did a great job directing. This movie literally made me cry. It's a movie about cancer patients, this never ends well. I really like the cast. Pros: Strong performances from the lead actors greatly enhance the overall experience. A great (maybe even optimistic) view on the fleetingness of life, on living while waiting for death, and on how the death of a loved one affects the survivors. Cons: Dialogue can be overly cheesy. Idealized central relationship might demand a little too much suspension of disbelief.

A little too forceful and manipulative in its attempts to pull an emotional reaction from viewers, but still a pretty good movie based solely on the strength of Shailene Woodley's performance. When I heard of Green's book at first I pointed a finger and said "Ha Ha!" by reflex, but then I got curious as to why it is so popular amongst adults (majority readership is over 30) and how they manage to get emotional over something so openly and primitively manipulative. I found my answers (sort of) reading the novel. This adaptation (I saw extended version) is very close, but, unsurprisingly, lacking in depth. Emotional kick in the balls for desperate masochists or something to make fun of.

Was expecting nothing but trite millennial pandering (which it did do, to be honest) but it really has a truly wonderful story that absolutely gut punched me, even though I was expecting it the whole time. Overall this is a nice love story that acts as emotional and involved as teenagers themselves--which isn't a bad thing. Woodley is so naturalistic and a delight to see onscreen. And that helps make this a good first step for young viewers thinking about mortality. While not as good as Spectacular Now or Perks of Being a Wallflower, it's still a nice addition to a recent batch of YA love story adaptations. And the M83 song over the ending credits is perfect.

I am completely unashamed to say that I loved The Fault in Our Stars. It is sentimental enough to get me emotionally invested in the characters and story, but humorous enough to provide a slightly different perspective on cancer and its devastating effects. Woodley and Elgort turn in incredible performances and have great chemistry as well, making their romance very believable. Dafoe also has a great bit part that shows some nice range. Genuinely emotional, this movie will have you in tears. The characters are often way too realistic and the situations they deal with are incredibly heartbreaking. Each and every moment of this film is flawless, Woodley and Elgort add just the right amount of emotional and wit as the film progresses. Two teenagers with cancer--the bitter, lonely Hazel (Shailene Woodley) and the chipper Gus (Ansel Elgort)--become close, edging towards love, even though Hazel, knowing her time is limited, fears breaking Gus' heart. Sterling performances by Woodley and Elgort (who are genuinely sweet together) overcome the unevenness of the writing (sometimes honest, sometimes hamfisted) and the awful, faux-indie soundtrack. A family who can afford chemo therapy for years and decent car to drive their daughter to church happened not being able afford a simple air ticket to Amsterdam for their dying daughter. The make-up remembered me of german post-war-movies. When the women stepped out of the train from the concentration camps - and looked like Hepburn! What a nice, äh, accident it is, that they kiss while Anne Frank is telling them that life is good. All this is particularly galling, when a movie starts with the words: "This is the truth". It's where the clumsiness of a rom-com, produced to make 16-yearolds use words like "meaning of life" in their blogs afterwards, becomes political.

If you don't like teenagers, the fact that they are dying is not going to make you like them any better. That said, the twist on the genre that both young lovers are dying opens things up, and the relationship can develop both characters. Some of that works, but Elgort's overrated performance grates. The Fault in Our Stars benefits from strong performances by Elgort & Woodley, but a clichéd & overlong screenplay left me exasperated. The themes surrounding life & death are decent; and despite some well-written scenes, too often a scene drops off the cliff of cheesiness (eg. kissing atop the Anne Frank house). A lot of characters are superfluous or underdeveloped, but that fits with the theme of incompleteness. Watchable, but not nearly as profound as it thinks it is.

An example of how this utterly fails is how we're supposed to see the main dude as mysteriously charming, but in actuality he comes across like a creepy asshole. If you want to be depressed than this is the movie for you. Sure it was cute at times and the acting was good but this was just to depressive for my taste!

Another film shown on a bus. I felt like a fly as I kept returning my gaze to the bright screen despite the film's mediocrity.

Very much a young-adult movie, with a trite unsophisticated writing. The male lead is particularly abysmal and insufferable.

There's something wrong with my Blu-Ray player clock. I swear this was 4 hours long. I learned a lot though, like that a visit to the Anne Frank house makes kids horny. Good to know.

It's one eye-rollingly sappy moment after another. Would have been infinitely more interesting if the focus was on Willem Dafoe's character.

Well-acted and moving in the end, though twee and flawed in myriad ways. The scene where Hazel and Gus first kiss and everyone around them starts applauding was a reeeaall cringer. Actually, probably my favorite part of the whole film was a lesson in "never meet your idols" that was somewhat detached from the central cancer/romance narrative.

The leading man is a phony. And the movie admits as much halfway thru its runtime; he's putting on an act. A guy who tries this hard to be charming tends not to be exclusive to a single girl. And so, this is a female fantasy. It's the Manic Pixie Dream Guy. ...but still though, it does touch on some lifelong truths. Good acting. I'm not saying she's "brave", but I like that Shailene Woodley will lug around an oxygen tube and wear no makeup, in her prime years, no less. She's a good girl.

Call me a cold bastard, but I found it sappy and mediocre. Now, I was thinking of giving it a higher score due to Woodley's honest performance but it wasn't enough.

An interesting film, in the sense that it deals with death and love as not being separate of each other, but rather entwined. The film has a typical romance-film start, followed by an awkward and cheesy meeting with Gus, the love interest. An otherwise pleasant film is ruined, however, by what feels like utterly manufactured drama and romance, ruining any attempt at on screen chemistry and robbing me of empathizing with or connecting to the film. Unfortunate, given the raves I heard about it.
