For a spoof, this is pretty slow and not that funny, with only Jack MacGowran as Ambronsius giving the kind of energetic, farcical performance this material needs. The curveball ending doesn't really work either. I couldn't help wondering what a contemporary Mel Brooks version would have been like, though this is still better than his later Dracula: Dead and Loving It.

More hokey and silly than amusing. The pacing is rather slow and there's just not that much of interest happening. The sets are pretty atmospheric and at least give the film some visual flair.

Heavy, slow spoof of _Dracula_, most of which shows that sense of humour is very personal; a few effective moments hardly compensate for the prevailing stodge.

I'm always let down a little after watching this, as it just isn't that great. But it is worth watching, and eventually rewatching. Life is tough isn't it?

Watching Polanski attempt slapstick comedy is about as surreal as letting Kafka write an episode of The Office.

Every time it tries to be funny, it causes me physical pain. Polanski just isn't a comedy director.

The perfect recipe for mixing horror with laughs. Really funny but noneless the atmosphere really is that of the classic Hammer horror movies.

Very Good. Roman Polanski directs and stars in this fiercely funny take on the vampire legend. A crazed old professor and his idiotic assistant visit a Transylvanian village to save the local tavern owner's virgin daughter from the fangs of the bloodthirsty count. If you ever want to watch a movie just to sit back and......laugh, this slap-stick is your ticket.

An entertaining vampire comedy, if not always hilarious--it's generally amusing, with some quite funny parts, lovely scenery, good acting, and a very self-assured vampire. Offbeat, but kind of fun.

An enjoyable vampire yarn which works as both parody and genre pic. While I don't find it great exactly (nor scary), there's something cozy and special about its company - not least because of MacGowran's flair and timing - that will tempt me to return to it.

Had never seen this "classic". Pretty unfunny for the most part. It's well directed and the design of everything is good not great for Polanski standards. But it's such a slog for the most part. Love slow burning horror flicks but this just ain't it! It's just lame joke wise as well!!

Amazingly bad. I love horror films and Roman Polanski, too. If I had seen this when it was new I might have killed Sharon Tate before the Manson Family did

Not terrible, but clearly comedy is not Polanski's forte. There's a few good chuckles, most of it is pretty lame. Not nearly as funny as Young Frankenstein, or even Blood for Dracula. The castle is a magnificent location, though.

The movie itself is not so amazing but I simply love it for the fact that the musical came from this.

One of the best horror/comedies ever. The settings costumes, and cast are great. Great fun if you're looking for a good vampire film with some laughs.

Charlie Chaplin-esque comedy with glorious scenery and set designs combined with the absurdity of including not just vampires but homosexual vampires.

Could have been legitimately funny had Polanski had a comedic cast. That said there are a couple of amusing moments, but mostly the film is very bland.

Polanski's stylish send-up of Hammer vampire films. Like _Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein_, this plays the supernatural elements perfectly straight, with the humor arising from the "normal" characters' reaction to it.

the reason I'm giving this a 74 instead of a 49 is because of that amazingly choreographed continuous take in the dance scene near the end.

This one gets lost in the shuffle for me; it's an ordinary work of horror parody. There was enough of the spooky and the silly to keep me happy, but there wasn't enough there for me to rank this alongside some of Polanski's other, better, films.

Very nicely directed. It's not a hysterical film, but it has its moments of comedy too.

Brilliant in its understated comedy, Polanski gives a pitch perfect performance in addition to a well crafted production. More like Bava's Black Sabbath than any Hammer film there's a purity to the point of reverence for the genre. It's a bit slow to start though and if they cut it back to 90 minutes (about as long as any comedy should be) it probably would have been a much stronger film.

I loved it: the sets, the costumes, the soundtrack, most of the humour. It was silly and had over-the-top jokes, performances and overall feel, but it was the right amount of over-the-topness. It was quite slow, one might say even tedious at some parts, and I can see why people have problems with the film. I, for one, think that Polanski and comedies works well - Cul-de-Sac was very enjoyable, for example.

Deadeningly dull horror comedy seems to be taking pot-shots at the later Hammer-Cushing-Lee cycle of horror films, which could have been a worthy target if Polanski wasn't (surprisingly) so incompetent at executing slapstick. A fine cast is left to founder as events on screen become louder, more frantic and ultimately grating. A rare misfire and disappointment from the usually masterful Polanski on both sides of the camera.

Incredibly unfunny and tedious. Even when a joke is good the delivery somehow manages to strangle the humour so it loses any chance of being funny. Most of the runtime doesn't even have that, though, just long drawn out scenes of mediocre plotting.

I rank it slightly higher than i should only because i love the hammer atmosphere this effectively and beautifully emulates. Otherwise it was slow, the humor either much too dry or just plain bland to stimulate me. I totally zoned out for a good twenty minutes.

Pure fun, while bearing many of Polanski's terrors. I was afraid it was gonna be a greasy comedy, but it's completely ill fated, like cold chocolate oozing with death! And also quite gay.

One of the worst comedies I have ever seen. It's like Polanski had been told about humour, but didn't grasp the concept at all. It's so unfunny that it comes full circle and it becomes amusing to watch every attempt at comedy (Boobs! Gays! People being stupid!) fall flat on its face. In much the same way, the style of this movie is awful but it's so thoroughly awful - acting, camera, set design and even the sound work is bad - that you can't help being fascinated for all the wrong reasons.
