The Führer Gives the Jews a City
Remove ads
The only film known to be made by the Nazis inside an operating concentration camp. Filmed in Theresienstadt, the "model" ghetto established by the Nazis in 1941 in Terezin, Czechoslovakia, Joseph Goebbels intended to use the film to prove to the International Red Cross and the world that Jews were being well-treated in the camps, however, is an elaborately hoax presenting a false picture of camp life. Upon completion, the director and most of the cast of prisoners were shipped to Auschwitz. (imdb)

The most egregious deliberate abuse of the cinematic medium ever committed, for which it goes without saying that the cast, crew and director bear no responsibility, being its first and most direct victims. It seems, incredibly but also unsurprisingly, that this film has been posted to YouTube by Nazi sympathisers, the incredible part being that they could imagine that doing so serves their "cause". On Theresienstadt, see also Claude Lanzmann's THE LAST OF THE UNJUST.

I give it a 0 only because it is unratable, and not because it is valueless. In fact, it's so valuable that everyone should watch it once, as a lesson on just how absurdly easy it is to perpetrate the absolute worst lie with pictures. The film is full of faces. Little girls eating sandwiches in the sun, elderly men enjoying a lecture, women laughing. Every single one of the oblivious participants, including those behind the camera, was then treated to a humiliating and torturous death.

Gerron did what he could by trying to make a film so boring it would literally bore the Nazi's to death. Unfortunately for everybody, that did not happen. But in all seriousness, the circumstances surrounding the film are abominable. More than one person will burn in hell because of this film and that most certainly does not include the cast, crew, and Gerron who were innocent of anything other than making a boring film. Nazi's were fucking evil and I feel guilty for even seeing this.

While it's more sophisticated than other similar pieces I've seen. The fact that the intended audience -the Red Cross at least- swallowed it is a peculiar kind of horror.

The one film where describing it as a "crime of cinema" is not hyperbole.
