Harris gives a superb performance in this drama, which is not unlike the dark side of John Ford's _The Quiet Man_.

It's actually not a complete disaster. The exploration of The Bull's insanity during the end (something which doesn't feature in the play) is very interesting. The end is ridiculously over the top, but it is still very emotionally harrowing

Mix of interesting cinematic choices & narrative problems (really some mediocre characterizations in this). It's a good thing that John Hurt delivers in each scene.

All the characters are just stupid fucking idiots who deserved everything they got. It's generally a bad sign when you're rooting for the bad guys in a movie; I just wanted Bull McCabe to fail at everything he did, he was such a self-righteous indignant jackass. And what the fuck was John Hurt doing? A grating, irritating mess.

The plot is a little thin, but John Hurt is good and Richard Harris gives one of his best performances.

I disagree with the "hero's" thesis, but it's a good movie anyway

The aptly named "Bull" McCabe (Richard Harris) has rented and cultivated a once-barren field for years. When the owner decides to sell it to the highest bidder--an American developer (Tom Berenger)--McCabe takes matters into his own hands. Berenger's role is underwritten and the ending tips over into melodrama, but it's an engaging tale throughout, and Jim Sheridan handles it well. Harris was deservedly nominated for his brutish yet poignant performance; Sean Bean and John Hurt are equally fine.
