The Fire Within: A Requiem for Katia and Maurice Krafft
A feature-length documentary about the legendary French volcanologists, Maurice and Katia Krafft. The Kraffts left an archive of over 200 hours of footage, unprecedented in its spectacular and hypnotic beauty. Werner Herzog who had access to the entire archive, created a film that cannot be categorized. It is not a biography. It is a rather a requiem celebrating their legacy. (Abacus Media Rights)

It seems almost cold to give such a low score because it is a tribute to a couple who lived and died for their passion/profession. Nonetheless, while some of the footage is excellent, it wasn't as compelling as Into the Inferno, and it is becoming increasingly difficult to differentiate Herzog's recent documentaries from each other.

It's fascinating to follow Herzog going through the Kraffts' archives and investigating the images they produced as both scientists and filmmakers, commenting on the daredevil expeditions they made, the hardships they endured and finally their final days near Mount Unzen. Solemn, poetic piece on the couple's obsession in capturing, framing and even being part of volcanoes and its sheer power of creating and destruction.

Herzog’s work is always very compelling and for me the interest is in the little aspects of humanity he draws attention to - the tourist hiking up the volcano in high heels and a bikini. The eccentricities of mankind.
