Viewed March 23, 2021. An extremely minor Chaplin short about an inept fireman who wreaks havoc at the station but rises to the occasion when he's summoned to a fire. There are some fun small gags here, primarily those involving Chaplin walking backwards with horses or futzing with a complicated coffee machine, and there's a great stunt toward the end when he scales a burning building, but a lot of the situations are uninspired. It's too thin even for 26 minutes.

Much like the Keystone Kops, here we have a firehouse filled with some men who weren't hired for their brains. After watching this, I've finally learned where the phrase "you need a good kick in the pants" comes from. The highlight was the "going up" on the fire pole, because we've all wondered about that.

Not so hot. With tons of gratuitous kicks to the behind and a lot of running back and forth in hopes of generating excitement, this one feels like a bit of a throwback to some of the weaker earlier shorts. Our hero scaling the burning building à la Fairbanks towards the end was nice, if you can stay awake that long.

Chaplin's inept fireman instigates fights with his fellow firefighters and flirts with the chief's girlfriend. The sheer unlikableness of his character puts a damper on his later heroism, a balance Chaplin always seemed to be searching for (and often missing) in these early comedies. When the rest of the fire department occupied on another call, Charlie rushes to the house and pulls a Keaton-esque stunt to rescue the damsel in distress.
