The Devil's Advocate sans all of the abhorrent imagery that makes The Devil's Advocate so unforgettable. You'd forgotten about The Devil's Advocate, hadn't you? That about sums up this review.

Wow, tense throughout. Good performances by all. Ending isn't as nicely tied up as the film would like you to believe. I could watch Ed Harris get frustrated all day. Tom Cruise running. Plot is similar to other Grisham novels. Fav scene: Gene Hackman confronting Jeanne Tripplehorn in the hotel room.

The closest thing that resembles dread in this is the guy who would go on to play Jigsaw jogging after a monorail.

"You can never leave The Firm, and if you try to escape, they'll give you plenty of breathing room and time to mingle with the FBI." I don't think that was the tagline, but it should have been. This movie establishes insane stakes and then does nothing with them over the course of two and a half droll, dull, impotent hours. The only thing firm was my penis, and that's because I stopped halfway through to watch porn instead, which was much more intelligently plotted. The piano score is abysmal.

Once it gets going you get several layers of intrigue, some strange, and sometimes hilarious, twists and turns and a conclusion that is quite creative, even if I'm sure it falls apart under the least scrutiny. It requires suspension of disbelief in a lot of places and at 2.5 hours could use some trimming, but it's fun and exciting, and while it's far from the best the genre has to offer I can't help but enjoy it.

Early in the film, Cruise decides to do some backflips with a young boy to show his enthusiasm for what the present and future holds for him. Later in the film, he walks by the same boy, no longer able to do a backflip because he is no longer naive.

Overly long film which seems to revel in the decadence of it's upper-class characters while also trying to make our protagonist likable by having him come from a poor background (never seen) and a troubled brother (on screen 4 times). Far too long and while there are some good performances and bit parts the film spends far too much time setting things up to make the (good) climax anywhere near worth it. The all-piano score is good when creating suspense but not suitable for Tom Cruise running.

The key to a good thriller is to have your characters in constant peril. 'The Firm' fails to maintain any of the eerie tension created in the opening scenes. The beginning makes the flick seem like 'The Firm' is some kind of cult that grows its employees into evil lawyers. Mitch tries to uncover something sinister, but takes his time doing so. Outside of it being morally wrong, they never really give Mitch a reason to act on his impulses. In the end, things are too happy-go-lucky to be credible.

Perhaps the 90s thriller-est of all 90 thrillers? Strong performances by good actors across the board and a decently well-done mystery thriller sort of plot, though a lot of it does play as kind of generic if you've seen any of many similar films. It's also very long, veering towards three hours, and I grew a bit restless by the end.

Likely my favorite Grisham novel-turned-movie (but I didn't read this one so maybe that's why). I thought Hackman kinda stole the show in this film, and could not get a grip as to which side he was on leaving me guessing until the end. Cruise is solid, and I have a hard time buying Tripplehorn in anything not dealing with polygamy (that's my own problem). The first Brimley meeting with Cruise where they discus what the "cops" could do is pretty good. Stop RUNNING! The ending took too long.

When compared to the novel, The Firm suffers greatly. It handles many of the best aspects of the story incredibly poorly in ways that dissolve all tension far too early. If it had remained truer to its source material, then it would have been an excellent film.

Basically, a solid film, though it's not what I expected. The mystery is intriguing enough but for a film about a law firm, it has no courtroom scenes (I know that's not the point, but I was expecting it). Very good cast, but I'm pretty certain I've seen Ed Harris play THE same character in multiple films.

Slick, glossy Grisham adaptation is first-class entertainment, thanks to an eclectic, crackerjack cast and Pollack's sure-handed direction. Some muddled plotting in the final reel (changed extensively from the novel) more than compensated for by Hackman's genuinely terrific performance, a pair of earnest and likable characterisations by Cruise and Tripplehorn, and a terrific piano jazz score by Dave Grusin, which is worth the price of admission on its own!

It was more sinister before they started revealing the danger and putting it in the hands of a few un-scary characters. It's hard to believe it's such a big conspiracy then, plus with how it slows down in the middle. Not too bad otherwise. Why did she forgive the cheating though?

Hearsay, I'm happy things worked out for ya. Other than that small detail, I think I prefer the book's finale to that of the film, and I don't know if this flick really warranted the 140 minutes that it ended up getting. Competent.

It's an OK thriller but nothing great and honestly by the end it feels like the film drags. No one scene in particular but after two and a half hours you just have to wonder if the film warranted that amount of time? Frankly it doesn't. None of the characters are amazing, none of the dialog is superb and really the only performance that impressed me was Gene Hackman. It's alright but certainly not a must see by any means, unless you really love John Grisham movie adaptations I guess.

Grisham adaptation were a genre on their own in the 90s. This one is a mediocre thriller without enough material to sustain the 154 min runtime. While the most interesting part, when you suspect something is wrong with the respectable firm but don't know yet for 100% sure, doesn't last long enough.

Beat by beat a 90's legal conspiracy thriller with a star-studded cast. If the genre and decade aesthetics appeal to you, this will probably deliver. But if you're not into this sort of flavour of film, there's really nothing that puts The Firm head and shoulders above other lesser known and more modestly cast flicks of the genre.

John Grisham novels are formulaic and pander to the reader (he's still ten times the writer I'll ever be). They're written to be adapted into movies. Having read this book, it was easy to see Cruise slip into the role of Mitch. Hackman is great as always, but Brimley playing a heavy - that was suprising., and very well done.

The vast peanut gallery of characters provide enough convincing people here to give Cruise a genuine environment to inhabit. A sensitive scene near the climax between Hackman and Tripplehorn is like an advanced course in acting. The parts of The Firm seem better than the whole. And there are some great parts.
