The First Time

A movie so utterly full of itself it needed not one, not two, but three 'music consultants' (properly credited in the opening two minutes) to make sure that there was a constant cataract of four-track millennial indie pop eroding away the audience's souls like a sand bar in a hurricane. Oh, and there's a British best friend because...British.

Day two of netflix/prime burnout, and I hate myself for saying this, but I actually liked this movie. The subtle homage to Pump Up The Volume was a nice touch, and that it brought me back to a more nostalgic period helped melt away some of the years that fucker Kevin Smith added by forcing me to watch his fucking reboot bullshit. FUCK.

This movie was very unexpectedly good. I had seen that it was getting positive reviews but I was still wondering how good a teen romcom that's PG-13 could be that great. Well, I will tell you what's great about it. The writing. I thought that the dialogue was really good. They had awkward conversations that I feel would happen in real life. I also thought that they handled the subject of teen sexuality well. Showing that not all of it goes perfectly or according to plan like in most movies.

A high school film that's talky, awkward and innocent'ish, and the writing - not everything, but most - and two leads make this sincere and enjoyable. *Preview*: #13#, exp-3*, popcorn, story, reviews, R3.

Starts off intriguingly as a teenage take on Before Sunrise, but can't quite help itself from aiming at the typical Hollywood comedy audience. The script is clever and the actors are good, but everything is maybe a bit too neat and rehearsed to feel authentic. Still definitely worth a watch for fans of the genre.

The only real hinderance for this film was prententious dialogue. Dylan O'Brien and Britt Robertson have the chemistry and some of the moments do come off as genuine. We all have a first time story, some embarassing, some sad, some perfect and others kinky. This one was awkward and acted well by the star power of the leads like I said the only hinderance was the need to have long winded monologues about who they were or who the want to be instead of making the moment as realistic as possible.

Well, Before Sunrise comparison certainly doesn't work in it's favor. This is a movie that constantly talks about not being the movie it already is. The first time bit works though.

I knew nothing good will come out of it, but Spectacular Now, another teen romance film that came out around same time, was so good that I decided to give this one benefit of a doubt. Mistake. Neither sex comedy, nor serious-ish slice of life drama, just dumb teenagers being dumb. Sundance Dramatic Competition just lost my trust.

half "Before" Before Sunrise, half a standard indie romance movie. The first part of that works better than the second part. It all depends on how likeable you find the leads and the pair here are great. I'm not sure what's missing from the rest but it was just missing that unquantifiable element
