The First Wives Club

Talk about diamond in the rough. It's on Netflix now, so there's no reason not to see it and a rendition of "You Don't Own Me" with Keaton, Hawn, and Midler that will put Suicide Squad to shame (as if that movie didn't have enough shame already).

Funny.

As a guy, I am ashamed to say that this movie WASN'T terrible. In fact, it's actually a little endearing. It's still your run-of-the-mill chick flick where the men are put in their place and the women come out on top, but it was mildly entertaining, and had some strangely hilarious performances by Maggie Smith and SJP (who is usually utterly wretched).

forced to see this in the theatre. horrible. really bad. there's a reason these people were divorced.

Sassy, privileged, middle-aged 90's women bond over resentment of men. This was a fun watch in parts, despite seeming distinctly un-feminist.

Silly, fluffy comedy works best if you don’t parse the logic or “message” and instead accept it for what it is – an excuse to see Hawn, Keaton and Midler having a whale of a time with their usual on-screen personas; all three ladies are in terrific form and spark well off each other, offsetting the occasional leaden pacing which threatens to undermine the comic momentum of some of the set pieces. If the great supporting cast feel a little underutilised, they are still great fun to have around.

The kind of film made so that there is some guff to stick on TV during the day when nobody is actually watching. Only really watchable if you happen to be doing something else. At least it raised the odd smile.

Some very easy potshots covered over with the trio's insanely appealing charm.

Goldie Hawn. How utterly annoying.

Normally, I enjoy movies with Goldie Hawn, but I guess her getting old and the presence of Bette Midler is enough to ruin anything, including a middling script.

I guess you have to be a middle-aged woman that's gone through a divorce to appreciate this?

The chickiest of all chick flicks. A chick flick to the tenth power. I like all the actresses but it felt like punishment being forced to sit through this damn thing.

Despite the anti-male overtones, it's hard to ignore good performances by Midler and Hawn. I'm not afraid to say that I like this film.
