Twelfth-century Lombardy lies under the iron heel of German overlord Count Ulrich 'The Hawk', but in the mountains, guerillas yet resist. Five years before our story, Ulrich stole away the pretty wife of young archer Dardo who, cynical rather than embittered, still has little interest in joining the rebels. But this changes when his son, too, is taken from him. The rest is lighthearted swashbuckling, plus romantic interludes with lovely hostage Anne. (imdb)

Really desperately, utterly wants to be The Adventures of Robin Hood. However, it's even more cartoonish, like a Hanna-Barbera version of a revolution. I like Mayo and Lancaster has a big grin, but the movie just feels like a dirty, pale imitation of a great one.

A little too silly for me.

Silly but moderately entertaining Hollywood adventure yarn with an anti-nobility theme. Lancaster shows off his acrobatic skills.

Colourful Tourneur is not without charm, and Lancaster is in full star mode. As commonly noted, it does seem modeled after Robin Hood, but the characters aren't as well written and it lacks truly memorable standout scenes. Nonetheless, Tourneur keeps the pace lively, and the use of Technicolor is frequently impressive.

What set this one apart was the physical stunts. Though not very authentic, it was an entertaining movie.

Far superior to the buffoonery of "The Crimson Pirate," this William Tell type tale of Lombard resistance against the Hessians is elegantly directed by Tourneur.

An old fashion swashbuckler with lots of brightly colored circus action. Like this film much more as a pre-teen than I did as an adult.

A serviceable swashbuckler, it's reminiscent of early Robin Hood adaptations, except here the story, characters and action are all comparatively bland. The film is mainly memorable for showcasing Lancaster's impressive athletic prowess, as he performs a number of stunts gleaned from his days in the circus, while the fine costumes and eye-catching Technicolor palette afford it a real visual richness.

This Burt Lancaster swashbuckler feels like something Errol Flynn would have done in his younger years, except with the added spectacle of actual circus acrobatics! Brings a real good time!
