From what I've seen I tend to prefer Almodóvar's more recent films. The Flower of My Secret is amusing enough, but I can't say I saw anything particularly special in it. It kind of annoyed me that two of the best scenes - where the woman is talking to the doctors about her son's brain damage - are pretty much abandoned 15 minutes in to the movie.

This is obviously the film where Almodovar made the full transition from parodies of melodramas to actual, real-deal melodrama. As such i find it less satisfying than much of his other work (i prefer the early, over-the-top stuff). That said, it's still completely an Almodovar film so it's quite good and gorgeously colorful and all that, only somewhat less fun and ridiculous.

A somewhat Bergman-like drama that lacks the spark, charm and humor of Almodovar's better films, but it was so warm and moving I got swept up by it anyway. His talent for crafting complex characters is admirable, and I adore the way he discovers such lively shots and compositions.

I had been advised that this was one of Almodovar's best, a claim that I ultimately disagree with. It's too uneven and feels like a dry-run for his great later movies. What it has in its favour is a tour-de-force by Parides - funny, furious, desperate and playful, she runs the gamut. De Palma and Lampreave, are good value as Marisa's constantly feuding sister and mother. Worthwhile.
