Filmed in England, Flying Squad was the final effort of veteran silent-film director Herbert (Peter Pan) Brenon. The script was based on a popular play by suspense specialist Edgar Wallace, adapted by the late Wallace's son. Carol Goodner stars as the sister of a young man who was murdered by drug smugglers. Carol joins the gang, hoping to bring the criminals to justice. She learns that her brother was knocked off by a crooked cop, who is in deep with the gang and can't escape their clutches. An Edgar Wallace crime story which had already been made twice. Silent one in 1929 and the first talkie in 1932, and I'm unsure if either of those are available. If not, the 1940 adaptation isn't a poor substitute. While only a British B-movie, this flows in full speed and works satisfyingly as a box of popcorn excitement. Probable the most amusing performance is Basil Radford as a petty drunk, but they imported Hollywood B-blond Phyllis Brooks for this too, giving it a little glamor.
