The Forbidden Dance

March 16, 1990 was the day that not one but TWO movies about a sexy dance called the lambada hit theaters, and moviegoers had to choose which of them to see first. It was the Sophie’s Choice of awful movies about phony dance crazes! This one ends with an onscreen declaration: “This film is dedicated to the preservation of the rain forest.” So to those of you who saw Lambada instead of The Forbidden Dance, I hope you’re happy with your anti-rain-forest choice. WHY DO YOU HATE THE EARTH?!

Bizarre movie. Bizarre failures. 1. The official language of Brazil is not Spanish, is Portuguese. 2. Capoeira is a martial art, not a native ritual. 3. In this film, in Brazil there are only Indians, savages, barbarians, heretics, jungles and forests. Greydon Clark, fuck you, ignorant.

The second film about the lambada released 16th March 1990 (seriously), commissioning to screening took 4 months and while it would be too dismissive to say "and it shows!" the short-cuts in the script used to connect the dots between the major scenes are hilariously obvious. With a quaintly dated ecological message of "we have to stop the hole in the ozone layer" shoehorned in, the film is a harmless bit of fluff with some titillation thanks to the former Miss USA
