This just feels like Calvary, but lesser. Not in subject matter, but in how it deals with a serious issue. It does offer a bunch to think about, but the last 30 mins I don't think there's much reason to care about anybody. And while marketed as a drama, it does try the black comedy that McDonagh is known for, and does it poorly in comparison. Fiennes and Chastain are good but again, Gleeson in Calvary was a powerhouse. Still liked it but this is a noticeable step down for one of my fave writers.

I didn't like the ending of The Forgiven; it suffers from a case of Chekhov's (or rather Abdellah's) gun that I feel would have been better subverted. Regardless, the film is made up of strong performances, particularly from Fiennes, Taghmaoui, Kanater, Zaoui & Smith. Serious conversations subtexted with grief, culpability & consequence are juxtaposed against frivolity & selfishness, though the driving emotions are on par. Jones is again insufferable. Interesting moments, but slow at points.

Was kind of hoping that ISIS would come in and murder everyone. Then Ralph has his redemption arc and HE gets killed. Just feels like you're trying to punish the audience.

Do you know the feeling when you end up eating a lot, but nothing tastes good? That is the movie. It started off interesting, great setup and atmosphere, but then it was pretty much nothing. David's journey was neither a spiritual, nor a punishing one. The ending was very obvious from the moment the gun was introduced. But most of all, it was extremely disappointing and underwhelming. After the movie stewed in my mind for a bit, I felt even more irritated at it.
