The Fox and the Hound is a sweet film about friendship and how some things are stronger than instinct. No matter how cheesy that sounds, it's well presented, and The Fox and the Hound is a great Disney feature. Really good!

One of the more sinister and dark disney movies. The movie manages to show the innocence of childhood and the harsh reality of adulthood without being too preachie. Still it is clear that this movie is from the disney dark middle age between The Aristocats from '70 and The Little Mermaid from '89, where Disney didn't really produce any epic movies and didn't know which direction to take the studio.

The thing about The Fox and the Hound is, if you watch it, your soul will be hacked to pieces and you will be emotionally crippled and you'll be depressed for the rest of your life. But it's still a good movie.

It's definitely a kids movie and it will probably get overlooked by most kids of today because of Pixar, Dreamworks, and later Disney efforts. Be that as it may it's still a pretty emotional piece, it's just not as deep as the newer films are. Lacks the appeal for adults that newer animation films put in and it's hard for older people to not get bored during it unless they have memories of watching it as a kid.

A great story about growing up and the changing of friendship. When you are a kid, it's easy to make broad statements such as "We'll always be friends forever, won't we?" But, unfortunately, it doesn't always end up this way. "The Fox and the Hound" tells the story of a wonderful friendship doomed to end because of natural differences. Can a hunting dog stay best friends with a fox?

Infamous for its ability to make you cry, and totally deserving of that reputation. However, any of the non-tearjerker scenes are either boring or filled with completely out-of-place comic relief. Still, the raw power of "Best of Friends," "Goodbye May Seem Forever," and the ending are not to be undervalued.

The "friends forced to be enemies" premise would have resonated more if the film had dwelt more on the fox and the hound being both. As it is, it's mostly forgettable fluff with a few good action sequences and hardly any humour, and with its unmemorable-unusually so by Disney standards-secondary characters and songs there's not much to distract from it. Only the ever-so-slight side-plot with the odd-couple birds and the caterpillar ever really catches your fancy after all is said and done.

Yeah it’s fairly predictable and thinly plotted, but you can’t deny how unpredictable and intense the last act is, and kudos to Disney for making such a mature children’s movie. It’s cute for sure, but I was surprised how blunt and bittersweet the movie was, and the ending is pretty cathartic. Animation has aged perfectly fine. The whole movie has honestly. Not one of Disney’s best movies, but definitely one of their most surprising. I had a great (emotional) time!

It seems like people either really like or really dislike this movie. I loved it but all my friends hated it as a kid. The kinda dark turn that the movie takes near the end and the honest ending with their parting struck a chord for me. But if you're expecting a happily ever after ending, you're not going to get it.

I'm honestly not sure that the people who made this movie realize how nakedly it shows the horror and screwed-upness of social pressure, patriarchy, and entitlement. Amos Slade is a man who, because one time a fox attacked his chickens, feels like it's his duty to run rampant through other people's property and a public game preserve, killing as he goes, and blaming the wildlife itself for the injuries that result. Amazing. (...and almost none of the songs were really *songs*. What's with that.)

The Fox and the Hound is a movie about youth, the changes that come in growing up, and the roles of society. It starts off so lovable, but not everything can work so ideally in the end. And the movie handles it perfectly.

(2014-15 Disneython #18:) Explores similar themes to Bambi, but in a slightly less dreamy and more accessible way (no surprise, since we're officially into the 80s and the more-or-less modern era of Disney). It is cute, but has some real emotional stakes and darkness to it too. Ironically, given the title, I think the one thing most missing from it is the actual relationship of the fox and the hound - they spend a grand total of about 7 minutes of screentime together before becoming enemies.

I thought that this was one of the better Disney flicks that they put out during the 80's. It's surprisingly dark and serious with only a few songs in it to lighten the mood. Some parts towards the end might be too intense for the youngest viewers. The message of course remains timeless. The forests and vistas are drawn nicely and really help to set up the mood.

The best, most emotionally wrenching sequences of this can stand with the best of Disney (“Goodbye May Seem Forever”, especially as delivered by Nolan, is a quiet powerhouse), but it’s a shame that there is little to no effort spent developing the titular relationship, leaving Copper’s final gesture feeling hollow and manipulative, all the more puzzling why great swaths of time are dedicated to irrelevant (and fairly bland) comic relief characters at the margins. For 70s-80s era Disney, not bad.

The turn for the dark is pretty harsh, but it really is the first time this movie is coming alive. The ending is perhaps somewhat refreshing compared to run-of-the-mill Disney films. Pearl Bailey had no business going into voice acting whatsoever, her "singing" and depiction of Big Mama totally ruins the movie.

In many ways a pretty cool entry in the Disney canon but if we put some target demographic glasses on for a minute it's certifiably insane to start out cute and end up with fire, a humongous red-eyed bear and friends turning snarling enemies.
