The Ghost Breakers

Hope and Goddard at the top of their game, with Willie Best nailing the scared black act. The old cliches are done so magnificently you hardly can tell. Plot also keeps you guessing while keeping a brisk pace.

Hope said that Willie Best was the best actor he knew, and here Best is given the space to really flaunt his comedic prowess, even within the confines of the stereotypical black role he’s afforded. The pair thrive in the fast pace and relentless cloud of one-liners, which largely makes up for the unfortunate lack of any satisfying ghost action.

Another Hope + Goddard comedy-horror. On the plus side it's got more jokes and a tighter more menacing plot than The Cat and The Canary. On the minus side, the added variety in the humour also means terrible racist jokes and other big misses. If you get past those it's enjoyable enough.

This movie was a walking cliche even for the time it was made. That said it was a breezy, mostly enjoyable film. Not all of it has aged well.

Good, witty comedy set against a haunted house backdrop. Outdatted racial humor can be a bit akward for those who didn't live in that era.

Bob Hope and Paulette Goddard are re-teamed again for another haunted house comedy thriller. Director George Marshall does a good job of balancing the comedy with the chills.

"The Ghost Breakers" clearly reflects its time and didn't quite hit the mark for me. The humor, particularly the jokes surrounding the manservant, didn’t age well and felt offensive.

First-rate comedy thriller in which all the elements come together.
