Amazing scene where the dog comes back home and Jason Bateman looks at that dog and goes "I know it's him" , and my idiot brain read it as GORDO being the dog and the camera lingers on the dog for a really long time and I started HOOTIN AND HOLLERIN' and I'm not allowed back at Landmark Cinema. Painfully predictable, more like: The Grift.

Places an interesting twist on the whole 'guy gets revenge on those who bullied him as a kid' theme. Normally, viewers will side with the person getting the revenge because it was the extreme actions of the bullies that drove him to do those things. However, what happens when the formerly bullied party starts using the bully's family as an instrument in that revenge? Can we still sympathize with bullied party now? I don't know. I should probably stick to watching Van Damme movies anyway.

Pretty good movie. The Gift offers up good performances from Bateman, Hall, and Joel Edgerton proves to be a worthy film making, serving up some sharp direction, good writing, and a solid performance. The idea has perhaps been used before, but it's not usually done this well. Worth a sitting if you're up for something short and mysterious, with good acting.

The Gift is a shockingly good movie. Its poster has Joel Edgerton holding a present for the audience, and that's really what it feels like while watching it. He's given us something wonderful, and something that needs to be unwrapped before discovering how great it really is. You don't get smart, subversive, intense, and thematically strong thrillers every day, but we've been given one with The Gift. Appreciate the good films.

a female audience surrogate suffers due to a power game between bullying alpha conservative hubby (a role bateman was born to play) and his conniving, self-pitying, vengeance-seeking victim, each pursuing their own symbolically ideological ends with no regard for the collateral damage. toxic stuff, but not without purpose, demonstrating that in a world governed by entitled, exploitative males who spread 'poisonous ideas' 'because they can', you're gonna get fucked whoever wins.

The Gift works so well due perfect pacing and effective direction in establishing an impressively creepy tone throughout. Hall, Bateman and Edgerton do a great job of drawing in the audience as all sense of harmony is eroded, and a messy trail of fear, anger and doubt is unravelled with the plot. Without a happy ending, the film leaves you wondering...and in one train of thought, what would you do in any of the characters' shoes.

I really dig these sort of "adult contemporary" thrillers. Not above a cheap jump scare or too, but mostly makes great use of the lingering horror of unwanted attention from an outsider. I've always liked Edgerton as an actor, and he proves equally capable behind the camera. This would make a great double-feature with Juno, starring Jason Bateman as a terrible husband and to-be father. Also, THE BUNK!

A twist-ending thriller that actually works. Sets up as a garden variety stalker-murderer movie, only to subvert expectations by making Bateman the clear bad guy (as usual, he's very gifted at playing an asshole masquerading as an average Joe). The ending is brutal and great.

A throwback to 90s psychological thrillers that had me on the edge of my seat. Perfect casting with Rebecca Hall, Jason Bateman and Joel Edgerton. Speaking of Edgerton, he does a great job writing and directing, in addition to his acting role. He keeps the film rolling slowly but surely with its reveals subverting expectations around every corner. The film, and its fun surprises, are as much a gift as the one in the actual plot.

One of my favorite thrillers ever. I love Jason Bateman playing a role out of his element, and Joel Edgerton is amazing as this creepy, manipulative, and incredibly smart dude. He himself builds tension when he is in a scene, on top of the movie unfolding the way it does, my god I love this. Rebecca Hall is also great given the amount of trauma that is put on her. With this great of a ending, symbolism is at the foundation of this film. Very impressive from a directorial debut.

When Joel Edgerton gives you a gift, you better darn well accept it graciously! I really enjoyed this present of a movie. It does have a couple slow parts and one time I even asked myself when something thrilling was going to happen... but once it does it gets really interesting and twist-filled. I was pretty blown away that Edgerton did pretty much everything in this film. He directed, wrote it, acted and produced this movie...

A slow burn type of film that pays off bit by sadistic bit. It manages to make a statement about bullying and high school angst without being preachy or overly moralistic. It's a nasty little film which successfully leaves most people probably with completely mixed emotions by the end. All the stars turn in great understated performances. The creeping dread and edge of your seat tenseness is successfully maintained in the most mundane upper class suburbanite setting.

The small core of lead actors elevate this beyond its modest premise -- one that you are no doubt familiar with if you have anything more than a passing interest in thrillers. Edgerton plays a terrific maybe/maybe not creep, and his misguided attempts to form a connection with Bateman (nice work playing against type) and Hall (great, as always) are as cringe-worthy as "The Office: UK". The "revelation", like most in this genre, is kinda "eh" but this does it job and does it pretty well.

At its best, it's just boring. At its worst, it's like--you know when you've messed something up at work and your boss calls you into his office and sort of passive-aggressively fusses at you about it in front of a bunch of people for like ten minutes? At its worst, it's like that. So, let's try really hard not to watch movies like that in the future, mmkay? Thanks! (thumbs up, clicking sound with tongue, insincere slap on the back)

Edgerton makes an impressive debut in both the writer and director's seat with 'The Gift'; an ultimately familiar albeit impressively executed thriller that more often than not subverts expectations in the right ways. Bateman's casting is worth special note due to his trademark condescending smugness being used to the picture's benefit.

Sometimes the writing takes shortcuts and the scenes without Joel Edgerton are much weaker than scenes with him but overall it was really good and a gripping suspense movie with a couple of nice twists. The acting in this was the real highlight for me as it was superb and they all do a great job playing it ambiguous. It was also nice to see Bateman step out from playing his typical sarcastic douche role to playing angry douche. Looking forward to what Edgerton does next

Joel Edgerton wrote and directed a film with near perfect pacing and tension. Bateman and Hall are terrific in the leads, especially as the film progresses and the secrets begin to unravel around them. As engaging as this film is right from the start, the ending still felt a little too out of left field for the poignant points about bullying to stick. When I took the night to think about it I realized I liked it more than I thought I did. It does what it sets out to do; it's a tense, intelligent thriller with great performances from those involved, specifically director Edgerton who manages to make a slightly menacing character with a warm, inviting face. A bunch of twists and turns, handles "bullying" in a slightly meh way, but the ending is haunting and disturbing as it should be after the build-up.

Jason Bateman was great and it was very well-done. I hate the message of the film: bullying has SERIOUS repurcussions. It would have been one thing if the bullying was truly severe but the crux seemed to be that Bateman made up a story and Gordo's homophobic dad almost killed him. ...so why is his wife acting like Bateman is this evil person? It doesn't seem to fit together, which makes me think they're leaning into the messaging: sticks and stones might break bones but words ruin your life.

Top badass moment? Seeing another happy couple in a film being totally screwed up. (There’s nothing psychologically complex about this, it’s just pure jealousy.) I didn’t like either of them, or their upwardly mobile friends either. Gordon is my anti-hero of the week, (but please, lose the horrible nickname). He can leave presents on my doorstep anytime he wants... especially the wine. Hear Ride of the Valkyries prepare Simon for his very own Ragnarök! No cats, chainsaws or decapitations.

A short film dragged out to feature length. Almost all of it hinges on one twist that loses its potency when it's slowly revealed over the course of an hour. The opening half hour of formalities is also rather useless to the overarching theme, though you could maybe argue it's there to establish a sense of decency before peeling it back (even then I don't think it needs to be as long as it is). Suburban white version of Oldboy, basically.

OK, SAW THE END COMING FROM MILES AWAY. The 'nothing is as it seems' theory applies here: goodguy is the badguy and he kind of deserves the horrible gift. Very cool ending - the viewer has no idea what really happened at the end, so it keeps you thinking days after you've watched this movie. I thought it was kind of strange the woman left the man right after she got her child and at that exact moment the guy gets fired (well.. karma I guess). It was a real 'anti bully' movie. Starts out effective enough, becomes increasingly silly until it is just nonsense. The reactionary, patriarchal politics of legitimacy (far more important than rape, in this narrative) are attributed to the pretty horrible protagonist, an investment that makes possible his oh so awful fate, so one can't quite say that the film straight up endorses them. But the film, in truth, straight up endorses them. Also: It's all in the eyes? Pretty sure it's all in an easily performed blood test, actually.

you need to be a bully to succeed. not quite though: karma will get you in the end. for a film so reliant on its characters, it sure has uninteresting characters. the twist worked narratively, but of course it had to involve raping a woman. (you've stolen my liquid essence! spoiler!) somehow i had worked up reasonable expectations for this, but it really is a bunch of nothing. some tense moments.

This movie explores the topic of bullying in a very clever way. Glass is a motif used gently hinting at the idiom "He who lives in a glass house should not throw stones." This imagery is reinforced by the script with characters saying things like "do unto others as you would have them do unto you." The theme never feels contrived and only becomes clear when the story is complete. I went into this movie expecting a fast paced, creepy stalker, psychological thriller and that affected my

I really could not decide on whether I sympathize with Gordo or not.

So I predicted everything from start to finish accurately, as it was quite easy to do so. Edgerton doesn't have the writing/directing chops yet, but he does show talent. The acting in this film is really quite good, especially the scenes between Hall and Edgerton. The film relied heavily on jump scares which is always a cop out. Overall decent.

Lol, so bad, the acting is pretty painful and the moments that are supposed to be scary are awkward at best. It made me giggle though.

Simplistic, but suspenseful and polished all around. Hall is a hot mess, but Egerton and Bateman work great as the Gordo the Weirdo and The Asshole. A very satisfying ending.

Tense and well-acted, The Gift is an eerie and uncomfortable film about the past intruding when we least want it to. Deliberately paced, the film's few jump scares do little to cheapen the atmosphere the movie builds up, but the ending substitutes predictable nastiness for an effective resolution. Still, it's an enjoyable genre piece with strong performances.

Edgerton directs and acts in this slow burner of a thriller which on the surface resembles Pacific Heights and many other home invasion movies (ie Unlawful Entry with Liotta), but does a lot more with it. Who knew Jason Bateman had drama chops?

Edgerton does an amazing job writing, directing, and staring in this effective suspense-thriller. He's also surprisingly creepy in his role.
